[REQ]Follower Can Use Consumables

Don't know if it's possible without the CK, but I assume if it is it would require SKSE.

At any rate, down to the nitty gritty. I'd like to see a mod that would give followers a way to use potions and poisons, pretty simple. Maybe polish it up a bit, and give them the ability to think about what kind of weapon/armor they are using and then popping an appropriate potion for that type when combat starts, as well as allowing them to have thresholds for using restore potions as well, and giving them a trigger for using them at the start of combat. Perhaps some sort of internal delay timer while in combat for applying poisons so they aren't spamming them hit after hit.

If somebody was feeling really fancy, perhaps you could throw in a bit more elegant bit of coding, and let the AI be creative, say if they are getting hit with spell damage, consider a resist magic or elemental specific resist, and a damage magicka poison; perhaps do a check on the AI to see if it is aware of more than x number of enemy NPCs within x yards and use a frenzy or calm poison, or for caster followers, AoE spells.

Double bonus: some sort of method to make the NPC to distinguish between a carry inventory item and a usable item. Best I could brainstorm is using the favorite toggle to somehow switch a flag for usable/not usable, which could possibly be far more useful than just potions. You'd be able to force them into an outfit while allowing them to carry gear that may be better, but not necessarily what you want them to wear.

But anyway, that's my thought on it. Completely random set of ideas I had after grinding out tons of potions as a pure caster, only to have nothing to use 2h and heavy armor and archery potions on, to say nothing of the poisons, and even less on the ability to offload them on merchants easily.

So yeah, no idea if its even possible yet (or at all) but a cool idea, I suppose.

That is brilliand and useful idea!!! In oblivion you can command to compannion to pick up all from dead bandits or pick all flowers around. Command to companion "sell all" will be good too. He will automaticly sell all the stuff he don't use. (armors, weapons etc.)

If you sit,go to sleep or eat and drink, ride a horse or swim companion will try to do the same.

I gave Lydia a stack of various potions, and she uses them all the time. She uses healing potions when she gets knocked down due to massive blows. I haven't given her poisons to test out though.

Do followers use potions other than healing/mana/stamina potions? I've never seen them use a potion of fire resistance or anything like that. And I just modded Lydia such that she now does use resistance potions, so I really hope that wasn't all for nothing :P

When a followers health hits 0, a health potion is discarded and the heal is placed, preventing them from going prone/vulnerable like they do when hurt too much (aka inured crouching). I doubt they use skill potions, I never saw Borgakh use them. I'm not even sure her armour enchantments work for her. Despite being level 57 like me (console rigged her level), her damage is below par, while her armour and weapon are identical, it can't only be the perks.

You can try to disable and enable her, as it seems that is the only way to force followers to level with you.

I said she is leveled, at level 57, as I edited her through the console. It's probably a combination of the perks the player has and she doesn't and maybe armor bonusses of one-handed don't stick with NPC's. :)

Yeah, that crossed my mind too. So, to get back on the topic, how would a follower decide if he/she should use a skill potion? Obviously it should depend on her favorite skills/equipped items, but what about types of enemies? How strong must an enemy be so the potion wouldn't get wasted?
