Placing instead of Dropping?

When dropping an item from my inventory, is there any way to control it? I've done things like inadvertently picked up a bowl when trying to collect the items in it.

However, when I do, I can't manage to put it back. Removing it from my inventory just drops it randomly on the floor.

There are other cases where I'd like to be able to place something on a shelf or dresser in my house. So far, no luck and getting something to land in a reasonable manner.

There is no finesse in placing it, like being able to rotate the object around the 3 axis to place it perfectly e.g. a goblet on it's base.

Half the time I end up knocking most of the other crap off the surface I'm trying to place the object on, then give up in disgust leaving a mess.

Lydia can bloody well clean the place up for once!

Item placing in Skyrim is FUBAR. It might be intentional to stymie players from using items to gain height. With tons of patience, I can build a platform using large platters and heavy kettles, sometimes even 2 levels high. Unfortunately, it's very unstable and the slightest hit on the structure from another item I'm trying place on top will make it come crashing down. Not being able to save my progress as I'm building doesn't help. If it's done right though, I can jump on the platform to get a bit higher.

It's a wonder that item placing was even included. I've only found 1 quest so for where it can be used, and even then there is an alternative solution. And there's also the bucket/basket stealth trick IF you can manage to control the bucket placement, but I doubt the trick was intended.

Item placing is one of the things they have broken in Skyrim. I am gutted about this as I used to love decorating my houses in Oblivion, they looked brilliant and gave everything a more personal feel. I have tried in vain to decorate my houses in Skyrim but give up frustrated and annoyed. You just can't rotate things correctly, and place them where you would like them to stay, and then if you do manage to get something just so, when you come back in the house it is on the floor due to the clumsy housecarl or whatever.

Its just a waste of time...

Gutted about this and wondered if maybe a mod could be made to fix it? or is just stuffed forever?

Some items take 3 and 4 attempts to place. You won't know until you leave the region (fast travel somewhere far away) and come back. The item will be on the floor or sliding towards the edge (or through a wall) . After the 3rd try, consider it a non-placeable item. You can almost tell from how the shadows fall off it. If the item looks like it hovers a few centimeters above the location it's set upon, more then likely its going to be on the floor when you come back to the house.

The dragon burial map is a strange item. It is a stock item that I often find WAY below the house hovering in the "wasteland". Its only seen and retrievable with TCL. Some other items get lost in the space between the permanent rugs and the floor. Search very carefully if you've lost something near a rug. Chances are that it's still there but not visible.
