I admit it, I am a complete noob when it comes to modelling. I have literally just installed 3ds Max (and the .nif plugin, obviously) and I want to remove part of a helmet - but I don't actually know how to start... I have watched a few tutorial videos, but I can't find anything telling me how to do this..

 

Help would be appreciated, thanks :)

I advise you actually just model something simple, I dunno something like a vase or something. Just something that gets you using the poly modelling tools. But to answer your question, import the helmet model and skeleton, delete the BSDismemberskin modifier, add an edit poly modifier, drag it under the skin modifier, use that to select the bits you don't want and press delete. add a new BSDismemberskin modifier and it's basically ready for export.
