Skyrim Nexus Slow Today. Anyone else?

Depending on the hour (I guess higher or lower activity), it's been sometimes almost impossible to reach any page from Western Europe during this last week on the Oblivion / Morrowind part of the site.

But "with great power comes great responsibility". :P I'm really happy and thankful about the service that Dark0ne has been providing for years, but when one reaches a near complete monopoly, I think it's one's responsibility to make sure it's reachable by all. In my case I've only very little time to play when I can, and it's frustrating not to be able to update my mods or add new ones because the site is down/too slow most of the time - it's not a hobby/service type of thing now anymore, it's a business which makes money, so it should behave like a business too. (Luv ya still though :P). But it did make me wonder, what if the situation worsens, or one thing or another makes him stop the site. With no other alternative anymore, it'd become a total pain for a good while. That's the annoying part with monopolies. He could, for example, force everyone to use his downloader if he wanted (cnet anyone?), and due to the monopoly situation, we couldn't do anything about it. Not talking about him though, he wouldn't do that, but illustrating the annoyances of monopolies.

Aside from that, if it can be of any use, I was surprised to see how Opera (the browser) helps a lot. I don't know if it's the opera turbo part or whatever, but often I can't reach anything with firefox but can reach the site (slowly) with opera - or it fetches the information fast but without graphics etc. I was amazed by the difference. Been switching to opera recently because of many little things like that, it has little functions that are awesome, and it's more secure than Firefox. Still I'd recommend using it as auxiliary browser, because it's only 5% of the market share or something, and some banks don't accept it for example (but you can still cloak it and make it appear as any other browser you want). Sadly not open source though, and less add-ons for special things.

I've been having trouble with TES Nexus since the format change. One annoyance: I have to run through the download cycle twice before I get the pop-up from my machine to download the file. First time through it defaults back to the mod's description pate. Pages also take much longer to load and today I am not reaching stage 2 of the download cycle - I get the first pop-up and then it stalls. None of this happened before the format change to the site.

Over on the Skyrim Nexus site, everything is worse. Mod pages take ages to load or don't load at all, and the download pop-up never pops up.

Was looking for help on the forums but noticed a posting: "Millions of people use this site so the problem is on your end." OK. That and $1.50 gets me a cup of coffee. Can anyone offer anything more helpful? Switching from IE8 to Chrome makes no difference. I've noticed that my notebook, running Windows 7, is sometimes providing smoother surfing than this desktop running Windows XP, but no one ever suggests that running Windows XP would be the source of the problem.

Used this site for years before the format change without issues. I've been a premium user for a couple of three-month stints but mostly to support the site, not because it was difficult to access content as a non-premium user.

Skyrim Nexus is unusable by me so far and this site appears to be headed the same way. What a shame it'll be if I can't access mods here.

You may want to have a conversation with your ISP about how your IP is assigned and what IP you have.

My ISP uses a series of IPs and they are randomly assigned and I may have that IP for a day, a week, a month or a year before it is cycled. About 6 months ago what you describe was happening to me. The Nexus ran fine and then suddenly I had nothing but problems with the site. Pages slow or failed to load, could not download, if a download started it would fail, etc.. Tried everything on the Nexus forums I could find that suggested how to fix the problem - problem persisted with every browser I used. Any other web site I tried ran OK, but certain european sites and the Nexus in the UK I had problems with.

I finally called my ISP Tech Support and they called me back and said I had been assigned a "Bad IP" or a listed "Harvester IP" and that they would be taking that IP out of the cycle. I had to wait a day, but when I logged in after the 24 hour wait, the Nexus worked perfectly again.

The explanation I was given was that the IP had been used for some malicious purpose in the past, had been complained about, and was being filtered or blocked, likely by whomever the Nexus uses to run the Nexus site, and not by the Nexus itself.

Worth looking into as it solved my problems.

Site isn't exactly slow. i get time outs all the time. if it responds, it's lightning fast. if.

Really, it's a pain to browse through the nexus atm. i wonder why there aren't more complaints. i suggest to add another server for the time skyrim is that popular... it's not better with opera either.

i have to reload every site 2-3 times before it shows up (EDIT: at every time of the day) . i mean.. isn't that even more stressful for the servers?

i do not think that it has something to do with my isp. every other site works like a charm.

hope something changes. do you get different servers for browsing if you are a premium user? (not "just" for downloads). i don't think so, but if i really consider it atm. it's that bad. (im in europe btw)

  • 1 year later...

I haven't had any reports of timeouts since about 2 weeks after Skyrim was released. It might well be on your end (else, as you say, more would have complained).

Hi,

I can confirm I am having the same issue at present with all the premium servers, for around the last 48 hours, the question being was a change implemented on the nexus last weekend perhaps?

This being disconnected downloads at around 1.8 MB and 100/150k (ish) max download speeds ...

Cheers

Shaggy

Update - 21:50 22/01/2013 (GMT)

Sudden burst up to about 500k ...

Cheers

Shaggy

For me it's been stable and as fast (or slow) as normal today.

US east coast - mid Atlantic region using a smaller regional independent ISP not known for particularly fast connections.
