Spyware from Adverts

Hello Tessnexus.

Thought you might like to know that those boobie adverts that are suddenly appearing in my mod threads link to websites that attempt to install spyware on my computer. Since i have not given them permission to do so, and just agreed to view what movie out of typical male interest, such an action is in breach of the Data Protection act here in the UK and probably the same in other countries too.

So you might want to drop those adverts from your list before they get you in to trouble. It does not seem right to show boobie adverts on a website kids might use anyway. I am over 18 btw, so dont panic, im also very capable of dealing with threats to me system so no harm there either.

Just reporting this, i will not be following this threads progress.

That's what most ads do. They want you to click on it so you can infect your comp with spyware and viruses. You become a premium member, and those things will disappear. I may have gotten a few, but I close them no matter what. Don't ever accept anything from the ads. That's my advice to you.

Adverts shouldn't be allowed to install ANYTHING whatsoever on your computer. They shouldn't even be allowed to advertise at all. Period. I don't care if it pays for the bandwidth, advertising is stupid and pointless. End of discussion.

It does not seem right to show boobie adverts...

And why not? Oblivion is a mature game not suited for children, so why should a site largely devoted to Oblivion be tailored to them? Sure underage children play Oblivion and visit this site; I'm not denying that. However, they shouldn't. Dark0ne shouldn't be held responsible for showing adult material on a site about a game with an adult rating. It just doesn't seem right.

On the other hand, I agree about the spyware. It should not be allowed.

In the first place, Oblivion was rated "T", but ever since the creeps at the ESRB discovered that so-called "nudity" (which BTW isn't actually nudity) of one single mesh, they re-rated the game to "M", which is a blatant affront to the gamers themselves. And it's not an adult rating - "AO" would have pushed the game into being sold only at sex shops, thereby limiting the success it has now.

M = Mature

Mature = Adult

I never said it was rated AO; I said it was for adult audiences.

Yes, I may not agree with the new rating, but it has a new rating which cannot be argued, cannot be changed. That rating is M, for ages 17 and up.

PS. I got Oblivion right after it came out, so my copy is rated T. :P

Ha, same here! But you know they tried to do the same thing with Sims 2, raise the rating to M, but come on. Anyone who has ever played the game will know would rarely be played by anyone over 17.

Any ads that are clearly for an over 18 audience are negotiated with my ad partners to be taken down at earliest convenience. Of course I need to know about the ads before I can request they get taken down, so I respect when people report back on ads. I also don't agree with blatant spyware installers, especially those that directly try and install from a site. This is different from an ad for some software that you have clicked, and the corresponding site asks you to install a program that is spyware.

When no personal data is recorded about you it cannot be seen as a breach of the DPA. Nexus has cookies on it that track your activity on the site anonymously, including your country, what pages you visit, how long you spend on the pages and what links you click. This is extremely important data that helps me plan what features I should be improving and updating.

That's definitely what most scummy, low-end ads try to do. Gaming advertising is a hard to break sector; there aren't many agencies out there that focus on gaming and the ones that do find it hard to stay afloat and find relevant ads as most game developers simply go direct to the big sites (IGN, GameSpot, etc.) with their advertising budgets. One of my advertising partners has recently gone bankrupt leaving me with bad debts of about $600. Not catastrophic, but it does outline (a) the need to spread advertising across multiple agencies and (b) the fact the market is on a downer at the moment.

You are wrong. End of discussion.

On a side note, I'd like to point that I have a deep seated resentment toward advertising in general. I apologize if my opinion displeased you Dark, I meant nothing by it. Of late I've been making a fool of myself, and now I have a tonne of regret sitting on my head. If I am wrong, then i am wrong, and I won't deny my stupidity.
