phaota
Say what you like concerning the use of the keyboard and mouse for gaming, which I normally use anyway, but when it comes to Skyrim, I find the controller is much better to use for the game. Unless you are using a marble rollball mouse, try spinning 360 real quickly with a normal mouse. You can't. Sure, you can move just as fast through locations with the keyboard movement keys, but I find it much eaiser to precisely time and move with the controller. The game was built with it in mind anyway, so why not use it?If I didn't have the controller, I would use the keyboard, which I started the game with awhile back. But since I have the controller, I enjoy and like it better. I don't know what you mean by trolling, this is just my view on the controller verses keyboard/mouse. He had a pop at me earlier too, one of those aggressive I am waaaay too superior types. Sad really, as he is probably a frustrated genious who has wasted too much life playing World of Warcraft rather than getting a proper eduction. Woah! Actually that was a fine bit of Psychobabble there!!! maybe its me who's missed my calling! :psyduck:  p.s. I play with laptop and xbox controller too, I agree its great! avalanche0110
I've used both while playing skyrim, and I prefer the mouse and keyboard, though I will admit I use my ps3 controller emulating the 360 controller. I'm able to play without looking at the keyboard, I can turn 360 degrees much faster and more precisely than by holding a stick, with the added bonus of being able to move my view while pressing the 'use' key (I pick up a lot of small things and I hated taking my finger off the stick to grab an item and then either moving my whole character or moving my view with the same finger). There are some games where I prefer the controller, just not this one.
gigantibyte
Unless you are using a marble rollball mouse, try spinning 360 real quickly with a normal mouse. You can't.  Perhaps your only experience with mice is the old style with track balls? I use a normal laser mouse. Is this a fast enough spin?  You could probably do the same with an optical mouse if you raise the sensitivity setting in Skyrim.
Shantih
I've been using a controller ever since Fallout 3. The mouse is more accurate which is noticeable when sniping until you get used to the controller then the difference doesn't really matter. Seriously after a few hours of playing with the controller I never felt I needed more accuracy and if I can snipe in Fallout New Vegas with my controller then Skyrim doesn't present any problem on that front. Â IMO using sticks on a controller to move around feels more intuitive than hitting the AWSD buttons. I use a keyboard for work so it's actually nice not to have to use one when playing a game. That being said I totally understand that an FPS player may like the keyboard and mouse configuration. There is no arguing about playing style and preferences. Â In the end I prefer the controller because I don't like having to play with the keyboard on my lap or being hunched over the keyboard. With my controller I can sit back on the couch and relax without being glued to my computer screen. That's the real advantage IMO. phaota
Thank you, Shantih. My thoughts exactly.
Kirkreng
I play using my KB/M. Because I like using the hotkeys, it just works a little better for RPG's. However I have played a little using my controller, and it is very playable. The default UI is a lot easier to use and in a game like Skyrim precision usually isn't your main priority. And using a Controller is by far more comfortable than using KB/M. But I am just god and godawful with the controller, so for now I'll stick to my KB/M :)
Shantih
Don't give up, it takes a little practice. I'm not much of a console player myself but I really liked the controller after playing on a friend's Xbox (I've got big hands and other controllers feel too tiny). Don't be afraid to change a few settings (especially speed) since it can make a huge difference. Once you are used to the controller you can increase speed to the maximum and you won't need more than a very light touch to get the controller to do your bidding. Â There is a program called Xpadder that can be used to bind keys to a controller so you can use it with other games that don't support a controller. I've been using it to play DAO, KOTOR and the Witcher and it's really nice to be able to play these games without breaking your back over your keyboard. Â @phaota: I was simply stating my personal opinion based on my experience of using a controller. I imagine most serious FPS players probably have some incredibly good mouse that allows very swift and extremely accurate aiming especially for competitive online gaming but I doubt that such a device would make much of a difference for a single player fantasy game like Skyrim. LoadedOnPsycho
I've tried both the KB/M and Xbox (pc) controller, and found far better accuracy with the KB. I really like the ability to kick back with a controller, and the vanilla game is obviously made for it with the favorite system. There's a realy annoying thing with my controller I'm not sure how to fix, anytime moving the right stick there's a noticeable lag as it accelerates from zero to full; acting like the left stick for walk to sprint. Makes fights near impossible with fast targets. Any thoughts? Just using mouse in the meantime.
ginnyfizz
I have a particular reason for disliking the XBox 360 controller and nearly dumped Skyrim at the start because it was so clearly designed with that in mind. I have rheumatoid arthritis combined with small hands, thus cannot cope with mashing the XBox controller buttons. Whereas with my top notch Logitech gaming keyboard and fast tracking laser mouse, both of which are configurable for sensitivity, I am fine. Especially since I discovered where to disable the XBox controller for Skyrim and installed SkyUI.
