[WIP] Weapon Addition and Replacement Suite (WARS)

If I was to replace any of the pipe weapons, it would probably be the semi/auto one with a Sten gun.

That'd be nice. Maybe a WW2 era bolt action to replace the pipe bolt action?

It's funny, I was just talking to Hitman about this.

The thing is I like the idea of the pipe weapons - I think it makes sense for them to be there - I just think that the way they were implemented in FO4 is a little silly in places. I've mentioned this before somewhere, but prior to FO4's announcement I was actually considering adding "zip guns" to the game myself. Probably sort of along the lines of the Zip guns in earlier Fallout games.

So while I think something like a Sten gun would make more sense than the semi/auto pipe guns, the revolver/bolt-action pipe guns aren't as bad. I don't know if I'll replace those. (Even the Sten is a "maybe later on" thing for now.)

Here's kouoaeha's Mini-14 in Substance Painter:

- Mini-14 01

- Mini-14 02

- Mini-14 03

- Mini-14 04

- Mini-14 05

I added gloss maps and some more wear and tear - especially on the wood. Obviously there are some mesh changes too; the sawn-off stock, short barrel and separated flash hider.

Edit: Forgot to reiterate that this is to replace the vanilla Combat Rifle. It will be changed from .45 ACP to the oddly under-used 5.56x45mm, and no longer possible to re-chamber it into .308.

Yeah, I really hate the pipe guns but not the idea of them, I've always wanted to replace them somehow. The vanilla ones look pretty cartoony. I'd like to see them replaced with crappier, improvised weapons like you mentioned. Not even the animations or anything; the actual meshes just look ridiculous to me, as though they're purposely designed as opposed to being made to look like improvised weapons.

In addition, the fact that every second raider seems to have an automatic one is a bit absurd to me as well. Even in today's world, it's extremely rare that individuals building homemade guns manage to build a gun that is high quality enough to shoot fully automatically and not explode immediately. The fact that these supposedly ramshackle pipe guns are able to fire automatically without any repairs needed always completely ruined the immersion for me.

Like you said, the revolver and bolt action ones are pretty much fine (although I've always wanted to remodel the receiver) but if one were to address this problem, the automatic ones should ideally be ditched and replaced with low-quality, commonplace weapons like the Sten, or something like the Borz SMG Millenia did for New Vegas.

Something I never thought to ask, when do you think certain weapons would spawn, and what would their costs in bottlecaps be? Even if you don't have numbers, do you have any rough estimates?

I already mentioned the Pipe guns, but Toasty Fresh brought up a good point, that even if you're not too sure about what to replace the Pipe guns with, any low-quality submachine gun that people could feasibly make in their shed would be a valid alternative. I think the issue with the vanilla game's version is that it looks both too rough, and too manufactured. Things like the PPS, Borz, Sten, or M3 Grease Gun may make more sense for a weak, early game 9x19mm weapon. They're not fancy or all that good, but while they are production designs, they're deliberately simple to make. Perhaps someone managed to make a Grease Gun or Sten or something after the War, and taught this knowledge to other survivors until practically everyone knew how?

Also, while I'm commenting, should add that the Mini-14 looks really quite good!

Another thing that might be good is to use the rugged versions of modern revolvers, such as Ruger revolvers vs Smith & Wesson. Rugers tend to (not all) be more rugged & heavy looking and not as refined and dressed up. Also, if used 357 magnum revolvers, you'd have option (if possible to code) of shooting both 357 magnum and 38 special rounds just as IRL. Then could have revolver rifles (similar to Circuit Judge) that also shoots the same ammo. Or, could have lever rifles that shoot same ammo (both 357 and 38). Lever Rifles and Revolvers would give more old fashioned feel but not be truly "hand made".

Since you are using more real world style weapons, this combo might serve your purposes better than trying to cobble together pipe guns. The revolvers, revolver-rifles, and lever guns could then get upgrades to 44 magnum if need upgrades. Could also start all at 38 special, then upgrades to 357 magnum, then 44 magnum.

If wanted more rustic feel, could use break barrel revolvers instead of roll out cylinders. Or, even older style, could have non-roll out or break barrel and no speed load, just single load from "flip open" cylinder. Have no idea proper name. But here's an image = http://blog.cheaperthandirt.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Lefty_3.jpg

Then, could have upgraded designs that go from single load, to speed load. Not really IRL but would give upgrade options for game. And then no semi-auto or full auto versions at all.

Forgot to add, could also make upgrade path from single action to double action revolvers. So speed of fire would change. And animations too.

Altogether it would make the Minigun much more powerful, but it would still be very heavy, chew through heavy ammo, have tremendous recoil, etc.

Perhaps being mandatory to wear a powearmor to use it?

EDIT: forgot to say, I love the Ruger pics!
