jmviehmann6
I have been modding for a while but stoped playing skyrim and after coming back my mods stopped working so I started to follow this tutorial https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/wiki/beginners_guide to try and fix my mods. I got all the way to the TES5Edit section then when I launched it it says Fatal: Could not open registry key:\SOFTWARE\Bethesda\Softworks\Skyrim\ This can happen after Steam updates, run game's launcher to restore registry settings however whenever I try to open Skyrim launcher through MO or through steam it crashes on launch. I have tried verifying the cache and it says that there is one file missing and that it will be reacquired but nothing happens. What do I have to do to fix this problem? Kroekr
The missing file is your display options and happens every time you validate. Try running Skyrim from vanilla launcher. That will reset your display options and allow TesVEdit to work again.

Varichi
He's saying to go to your Skyrim base folder (usually Steam->SteamApps->common->Skyrim) and run the SkyrimLauncher there. You don't have to launch the game, it will create the necessary folders when you run the launcher and detect your settings and so forth.

Varichi
You're probably going to have to reinstall if you've already tried verifying your game cache.
Kroekr
Make sure you do NOT install in Program Files folder (steam default) otherwise you will have UAC issues. Make sure you have steam and NMM (if you use it) on the same hard drive or things will not work. Make sure you clean your masters again (one at a time) with TesVedit if you want to mod. jmviehmann6
I tried to reinstall it but it didn't work, I have Skyrim downloaded in a different file than the programs file and everything is on the same hard drive so thats good. The same issues are occurring as before the Skyrim launcher crashes on launch and TES5Edit is displaying the same error message. Is there anyway to manually edit my display options so that Skyrim will work again Edited December 9, 2016 by jmviehmann6
Kroekr
Have you tried with ALL mods disabled? Are you using NMM? If so, install it outside of program files also. You may have some leftover files in your My documents/my games/skyrim folder (ini settings) causing problems May have a leftover file in User folders. Do a search there for Skyrim or NMM
