How to install a mod

Recommended Posts

I downloaded a texture mod, but there were no instructions as to where to install it in Skyrim's folders. The several files of the mod, textures, DDS and NIF files, don't seem to match anything to replace. I can't seem to find a way to message the creator on this site. I hate to try randomly throwing them into the game files and risk messing something up.

Any suggestions?

You should be able to just drag the folders into your skyrim/data folder, it won't overwrite anything from the game, and if you don't like it after checking it out you can just delete the folders you just added

Also the Nexus Mod Manager is worth getting, it allows you to have a specific place to monitor the mods you are using, it will place them in the correct folders, and it will unload them if you don't want them anymore, very useful tool.

you can go to skyrimnexus.com and type in the search bar "Nexus Mod Manager", this will bring you to a download section, just download and install by following all the default prompts. After it is done installing, you will now be able to use the "Download with manager" option on any mod. just download with manager and it loads into NMM, then you can double click to install and launch Skyrim directly from NMM. If you decide you dont like the mod, you can then double click on it again, and it will uninstall the mod with no adverse affects to the game. Also, some mods do not have the "Download with manager" option, in this case just download and save, then you can use NMM to "add mod from file" option, and it will load the mod into NMM and you can then install/uninstall just the same as before.

I love NMM, it makes installing and uninstalling mods very simple!

Actually I was mistaken on where to download NMM, it is here - http://www.skyrimnexus.com/content/modmanager/

be aware that many mods are actually "utilities" and installed at the game's root directory (the same where are the executable and the \data folder itself and NOT inside the \data folder like the normal mods do.

To the extent I know, NMM may become confused if trying to install such utilities like a common mod.
