IronGator454
Hope everyone had a great Christmas, I sure did but am now left with an upgrade prob. Just need a few opinions. I run a Sapphire Dual X R9 270X (Radeon) and cant complain about, it works great but not getting fps should be so am planning on upgrade. Mainly only play FO4 (255mods) or watch movies but hold of a 2160P movie (57GB) and outta 6 players, only VLC will even attempt to show it. I know... 2160 on a 1080 not a good practice. But question is.... I am going to get a new card before i get a new TV for sure, so if going towards the top end of the line, just how important is 4K in a card if only have a 1080 screen and hope to use for another year before swapping it out? I dont wanna skimp on but a Titan would be too much though a GeForce GTX 1080 could be done. Basically asking if that would be considered overkill and should get a lesser card and use saved money to upgrade MB or CPU with. I do plan on a whole complete re-vamp of system soon so kinda leaning towards a keepable video card. As said... opinions anyone?Specs are:I7 860 Quad@ 3.67Asus P7P55D-E PRO16GB RipjawSapphire Dual X R9 270XWin10Pro64bit16TB on 6 drivesCorsair RM1000 PSCorsair H100I GTX water cooling42" 1080p Phillips TV
Di0nysys
My Asus R9 290 card just burnt out, so i'm in the middle of getting a new card. Going for the 1070 asts almost 40% less expensive than the 1080, and yet only 20% less beefy than the 1080. For all 1080p/1440p use cases, it's overkill. Even for VR and 4k, it's got plenty of horsepower to run games at those modes at good framerates. Reviewers really seem to like this card, and it's got good price/performance ratio. If you just wanna use the card for 1 year, the 1060 is at almost the same performance level as the 9the-gen 980's at a ~260$ price point. Also worth considering. Athanasa
[snip] Thank you, it's feedback like this for parts that really matters. 40% more costs for 20% more power? I can understand these numbers. And now I know what I'd go for out of the two.
jones177
Hi A GTX 1080 is not a good 4k solution for gaming if you like to run at 60fps. I use mine for 3440 X 1440. The 1080 was a bit of a disappointment to me. Unlike the GTX 980 ti, it hasn't lived up to the hype. For 4k I use 2 X GTX 980 tis. For the games that don't use SLI I play at 1440. For 1080 resolution I agree with di0nysys. This is basicly what you need for 60fps on a modded game. 1080 = GTX 980/10601440/1080 WS = GTX 980 ti/10701440 WS = GTX 10802160 = 2x GTX 980 ti/1070/1080 I am hoping that the GTX 1080 ti will be the first real single card 4k solution. I would wait for that one. Later
IronGator454
Thank ya'll for that info, its really appreciated. And when looked at as "Bang per Buck" as stated, it does seem like the GTX1080 would be overkill. The 1070 sounds like a much more usable card and with savings could upgrade in other areas also which would be way more beneficial overall than a 1080 or even Titan. snapper69
I used to play FO4 at 4k with an R9 390 and, to be honest, it didn't seem that bad, then I used the Steam FPS counter and saw how low the frame rate went (20 - 25) so I dropped the resolution to 2560x1440 and it went up to 25 - 35 fps. I bought a Gigabyte 1070 and at 2560x1440 it runs at 50 - 60 with everything at maximum. I haven't tried it at 4K as I've moved my 4K monitor to the right as a 2nd monitor and put a new Samsung 1440P monitor in front of me as the main monitor.
