Sudden CTDs in 30s-2mins of moving when outside

Hey, so, my 200+ modded skyrim has mostly been working fine, and I have a lvl 17 character by now. I've installed/uninstalled/updated a few mods during this small playthrough, but nothing too major or dependent on scripts (or so the mod authors say/omit), and I've always followed the author's instructions on how to uninstall/update/install the mods whenever they provided them. I also always check for incompatibilities and patches, as well as load order (which I manage myself).

It's been working fine for quite a while, when last week, I suddenly started getting random CTDs whenever I was moving and outside. First it was right beside Whiterun (which I assumed had something to do with JK's Whiterun at first, since it makes that area considerably more sluggish), but then it stopped, and happened again an hour or so later near Dawnstar. Seems to happen mostly anywhere now, as long as it is outside, and I'm moving, though I can't say for sure that it happens absolutely everywhere.

It doesn't seem to be save bloat, as the save files are all just around 5000-6000 kB, and they haven't increased in size by any unreasonable or suspicious degree relative to previous saves. I've also tried uninstalling/updating mods like SkyBe Roads, Frostfall & Campfire, Practice Dummies, Smilodon, Simply Bigger Trees and such. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Sometimes the game lasts a bit longer before crashing, but it varies with the same mods and there doesn't seem to be any pattern.

Here is the original load order/mods that I had installed at the time (not including most texture/mesh mods, for obvious reasons): http://imgur.com/a/ndGvj

I'm not expecting much help, or any even, seeing as how most threads have no replies, and how vague my problem is, and how many causes it could have, and the changes I've done with the tweaking and the testing and the downgrading of NMM cause of the profile bug leaving all my mods classify as deactivated even though they show up in the load order and in-game (while sometimes causing bugs when deactivating/activating them again in NMM), but if anyone had any suggestion, tip, anything, it'd be very appreciated.

Like... I've waited so long to get back into this. I'm not a modder, I don't want nor do I have the time to learn how to become an expert at modding to the point where I only use manual saves, where I clean my saves whenever I tweak one single mod, where I make bashed patches and use MO or Wrye.

I just really wanted to play a better Skyrim, even more so during the holidays, when I'm on break from university. It's sadly one of the few things I really had to look for, which makes it so much more demoralizing and depressing whenever I try my best and waste hours (days, even!) trying to properly install and manage the mods I want while not having to become a "professional modder" (if you guys know what I mean), only for it to lull me into thinking it's finally working fine, only to suddenly and irreversibly crash on me when I was literally about to stop modding and start fully playing. And it was such a nice character too, god. Next thing will probably be starting from scratch, installing way less mods from all of these, on a brand new character, and not add anything to it ever. Though, from what I experienced the first time I modded Skyrim, like 3 years or so ago, I'll probably never find the willpower to even take this next step, seeing how last time and how this time both ended so frustratingly.

Sorry for the venting. It's late, and all I wanted to was to play one of my favorite games, but now all I feel is mostly empty. So much time spent on this only for nothing, time that could've been spent actually having fun, playing other games or trying other stuff.

If the crashes are only happening outside it could be a scripted event problem such as vampires, dragons, or some kind of enemy spawn added by a mod. Does it crash if you just hold still and do nothing outside?

If it only happens when you are moving it could also be a memory issue.

Have you tried using the script cleaner tool? http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/5031/?

An extreme troubleshooting would be backing up your load order, uninstalling every mod in nmm, then completely deleting and re-downloading your data folder in skyrim. Then re-installing everything. Combining that with a script cleaning might help.

Instead of trying to make the game work with 200 mods. Try and limit yourself to just 60-70 active plugins. You can put texture mods that do not have any added plugins to activate em. You will notice the game will run much smoother, faster, lesser lag and will have a better gaming experience. If you gotta have armors. Only go with armor mods your character will be using like almost 100% of the time. If you ain't gonna use a armor mod or a weapon in a game session deactivate em before you start a new game. The less plugins active the better the game will be.

Sorry it ain't a perfect solution but the game engine of skyrim SE even if its more stable is still just a awful engine when it comes to dealing with mods that have script. You got a insane amount of mods that add scripts by a huge amount and the game engine cannot handle it. It's not a question of not having enough vram or just ram. It's just the limitation of a very old outdated papyrus engine that cannot handle the stress.

Also i notice you are using immersive armor + rigmor. Remove rigmor it will cause a ctd with immersive armor if you start a new game. This has been mentioned many times in the forum during the last month.

Another issue you can try and get it fixed would be to activate the logs and post the log 0 of when you crash. See if you can determine the last few scripts to detect the culprit responsible for messing the save. Sometimes it could just be a script from a vanilla quest that went crazy because a quest mod you added messed with the vanilla setting.

Thank you both so much for the replies. I will be trying these solutions eventually, maybe in the next weekend or so, so if you would, please keep an eye on this thread for a while longer.

Pathtopower: How do I activate logs?

ShalabiRogue: If I stay still mostly around the initial area of the present save that I'm in, I don't think it CTDs, if it does, it takes a long time. If I move for a bit, it'll CTD in 30s-2mins. But one time, I moved just enough to CTD, but didn't, and then I stood still, and after like 10s it CTD'd anyway.

Yes. Open Skyrim.ini (My Documents/My Games/Skyrim) and add the following to it:

[Papyrus]
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

Afterward, in that same folder you will see a new folder called Logs. Inside that: Script. Inside Script you will (eventually) find 4 logs. Double click and they should open with notepad or any text editor. Papyrus.0.log is the most recent. At the end of it you will see the last process to happen before the crash.

Good Luck

Copy pasted this since i am currently to lazy to type all this. But just follow this route My documents/my games/skyrim special edition would the appropriate route.

So, I disabled a map mod, that paper map one, and the next two times I tried running the game as usual it wouldn't crash, even if it was sometimes laggy. But then just now it crashed again right in the usual spot/timeframe.

I've looked at the Papyrus.0 log, but I can't make heads or tails of this, much less figure out what process caused the game to crash:

I will start to disable most unessential mods, see if it gets better. Hopefully you guys are still paying attention to this thread :tongue:

Download this bug fix to fix that script error. You got that critterspawn bug that keeps repeating nonstop. That script is faulty and worst yet. It is a vanilla setting so it ain't a mod problem. But it can be fixed since others have had problems with it in the past.

https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/981701-critter-script-bugfix/ <---Explains what the problem is in greater details.

https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=34166 <--bugfix in question.

Will this fix your problem? Yes. Will it save your already corrupted save. Nope. Gonna have to start a whole new game because the problem is a vanilla bug once that rears its ugly head..it ain't gonna go away. Short of installing skse registryinvalidations=1 command. But we still gotta wait for skse64 to begin beta testing in mid marsh.

God freaking dammit, I just deactivated and deleted every SINGLE mod to prepare for another try at re-modding the game from scratch with a new character and it ends up being a vanilla bug. I haven't read the links yet, but from what I understand is that the vanilla bug itself corrupts my save file? Because the mods were apparently fine.

EDIT: I have read the link and supposedly installed the fix correctly, but I won't be playing a new character for a bit. Just setting up my mods again will take anywhere from a couple of days to a week or more, but yeah. Thanks a lot for the very specific help so far, pathtopower! And ye, the fix might decrease the frequency at which the game crashes (?), but it won't ever fix it for an affected save, am I correct? To not experience this problem again, I need a fresh save, a fresh new character. Just making sure I understand this properly.
