Infamy, Karma, nothing or something else?

So how would you solve this issue?

Personally I was glad that Skyrim didn't have the karma system from FO3. When you commit a crime without any witnesses or without leaving clues it shouldn't have any consequences. No omnipresent beings keeping tally or psychic NPC's that inexplicably know what you did.

The Infamy from Oblivion has the same kinds of drawbacks. It would make most sense if it only kept track of the actually witnessed bad (and good) deeds. Your deeds would spread mouth to mouth and thus you build a reputation, be it good or bad.

In Oblivion it somewhat made sense that unseen deeds also counted (Knights of the Nine) however together with psychic guards and everyone being aware of your rap sheet it didn't really work.

Skyrim has nothing though. You can murder half of the population and it has no repercussions whatsoever. Well, you might break a quest or two, but nothing as to how you're being regarded. Although I did not like karma or infamy it now feels empty.

A good system would in my opinion:

- make the net result of all your good and bad deeds have some influence on your own abilities (e.g. perks for being a good or bad character), and,

- should be without psychic NPC's; If no-one knows, people shouldn't react differently towards you.

Maybe it having some repercussions for your appearance would be an option. Getting a more darker or bright appearance, depending on how naughty you've been.

Fable comes to mind when i heard you talk about maby your character got brighter or darker.. With each evil act done in fable, it grow a pair of horns on your head. i also liked the way you grew fatter if you ate a lot of food. I would like to see this implemented as well. Would be awsome for everyone in a new town i run into just cower and run in fear because i slaughtered the town next to it.

Yeap, reminded me of Fable as well.

Reputation, infamy, karma whatever it is, they should be implemented as if how they track crimes in individual hold.

And let's say if you have a reputation of pillaging villages, then there should be wanted posters of you in that hold and nearby ones. People will know you, fear, cower, shun and run away from you for fear of their life. There is a natural aura of evil that exudes from you.

If the reputation is a positive one, then your fame precedes you. The people of the local hold and nearby ones will hail you as a hero, welcome you, provide free shelter, food, gifts and naturally ask you to take on quests. There is a natural aura of good that exudes from you that make everyone comfortable with you. lol

Strikes me as weird...the nords always had a soft spot for heroes...sagas and all. Skyrim didn't manage to capture that spirit...Sad

In Oblivion you at least got a statue. :P

And one doesn't get to be a real Nordic hero without things like having honor, being noble, righteous and so on.

But not only is there lack of acknowledgment for your accomplishments, how exactly you reach your goals makes no difference whatsoever.

Whatever choices you make or whatever character one displays you get the same recognition... none that is.

There should be some reflection.

Also the good/evil character perks in FO3 were great fun. When I read Skyrim was going to have a similar system I expected that kind of perks tbh. Not grinding and having to upgrade every skill five times.

I actually miss the fame side of the renown system from Oblivion. I wouldn't know about the infamy portion outside of the Gray Fox though. People smiled at me, recognized me on the street and even made a big old statue of me that the damned Thalmor probably took down because it conflicted with the lies they told about how they ended the Oblivion Crisis and not the CoC. In Skyrim, I'm thane in all the holds and I've killed an insane number of dragons in and out of the cities but everyone still treats me like dirt.

The psychic NPC thing bugs me to no end. If I kill all the Thalmor on the road, why is it that the bounty for murder disappears but the 40 gold assault bounty remains? It's ridiculous.

I am in such 100% agreement. Apparently I saved the whole entire world and am head of every guild there is, but guards act like I'm the mead boy still for the Companions. It destroys immersion and makes it feel like there are no stakes.

i liked the fact that some npcs still thought i was the mead runner for the companions when i was the harbinger. like he hasn't yet been told i'm no longer the new guy or lady. i can buy that.

To give the guards credit, you did become the leader of every guild pretty quickly...

Perhaps Bethesda was trying to keep the "Village" aspect going, instead of making everything about you, what you've done, and who you are.

To be honest, a lot of people in those towns don't care who you are unless it impacts them.

I think that, if Bethesda DID add recognition to the guards, we'd be missing out on the "normal" town experience.

That's one way of thinking about it. :P

I'd love a mod that adds spells, and when you cast them, NPC's in the game would recognize you as the Harbinger. You'd have a spell for each "role" you have in the game. But you can only adopt one role at a time.

The hard part would be adding voice lines to the guards, and matching the voices they already have.

Or perhaps there hasn't been any evolution in the NPC department since Oblivion?

Truth is, the guards are pretty much psychic when it comes to everything else, starting out with your every skill and guild membership. They just haven't got any script to go on for the PC rising up through the ranks. That's not a case of creating a certain feel but a case of simply not bothering.
