Just started World of Warcraft.

Just started playing last week, and I'm already rocking a level 48 human Protection Paladin. Still have to buy Lich King and Cataclysm, but I can still go up to 70, as far as I know. Having lots of fun, though, and it's really beyond addictive.

I'm playing on the Burning Legion server, as I love high-population, PvP servers. If anybody wants to hit me up for a dungeon or something, character's name is Zewp.

I'm also looking for a new guild, as the one I'm currently in is international, and mostly has foreigners using the guild chat.

I also have a question about PvP servers. Is it against the rules to go hunting for PvP. Say I'm gathering skins in Stranglethorn Vale at level 50, and I kill every single Horde character I come across, is this against the rules?

Also, gah! I hate when me and a Horde character are questing in the same area, and then I respectfully leave him alone, just to have him kill me when I'm busy fighting some mobs.

WoW in general is open PvP between factions. See horde, kill horde. Just don't be all that surprised when you have 6-7 higher level people people camping your body and watching the nearest graveyard when you start drawing attention to yourself. But in the contended areas, everything is pretty much fair game if you fight for it, just remember to vacate the area soon after if they aren't alone.

WoW also works off a system where each newer expansion has things that render all previous equipment (and in some cases races) obsolete. Meaning that the actual game doesn't start until around level 80(?) at this point. When Cataclysm was released I think they revamped all the original areas to give new players a sudden leg up, so you will probably hit a major leveling wall somewhere around 60 when you get into Burning Crusade stuff.

Never really played it myself, but have had the "joy" of friends who were into it heavily until about a year ago, and have seen enough of them playing to get the jist. Essentially, if you don't go and buy every expansion and grind your ass off to get to that top level, you will have your lungs handed to you in higher level PvP. If you're trying to save on money, but still buy everything, your best bet is to get yourself to a point where you meet the requirements for Deathknight (or whatever other prestige class they added), Then buy the expansions and start the process again with one of those classes.

WoW world PvP was one of the few things (aside from my friends and some solid RP) that kept me playing for as long as I did. There are very few rules regarding world PvP, the primary rule being Red = Dead. You can happily try ignoring the opposing faction, but as you have learned, opportunism is the key to survival there, so do unto others before they do unto you. As long as you don't abuse game mechanics exploits (like getting someplace you are not supposed to be able to get to), you should be fine. The general rule of thumb GMs use there is "if the problem has a PvP solution, then there is no problem" - what that means is if someone is camping you for an hour at the same location, your PvP solution is to call out in zonewide chat for help, or worst case log onto an alt, hop into town, and ask if someone can come out there to smack around whoever is camping you - odds are you will easily find folks looking for a good brawl out in the wilds.

As far as getting into a good guild, you will run into one major stumbling block on most servers - PvP guilds tend to be one of two kinds: either those who focus purely on arenas/battlegrounds, or those who prefer world PvP. The world PvP guilds are in the minority by far, but they do exist on almost every server to some degree. The rated-closed-PvP guilds will not be likely to draw in many lower level players as there is a tendency to focus purely on ratings and such, since you can't actually even earn rating points for arenas or battlegrounds til level 85. Most guilds you find, however, will be more PvE guilds with a dabbling into PvP. The best bet for getting a decent one is asking around in the lower level zones general chat, or reading the server forums to see who seems to have competent folks that are reasonable to get along with. Do NOT join a guild from Trade channel, you will only regret it down the line.

All that said, the Horde frowns upon your Alliance shenanigans, and a goblin hit squad will be on its way to help that furbolg kill you shortly. :ninja:

On a quick side note - PvP as a Prot Pally is hilarious fun, my main went that route and it frustrates your opponents to no end because you just do not die.

I tried WoW a few months ago and found it to my liking, I'd heard all sorts of hate against it-ridiculous amounts of hate and rage, and frankly I just couldn't see where some of it was coming from. As a PVP game it really was fun for me, but after only a few days my account got hacked, and then again several more times regardless of what security I had in place, which was a lot. Hacking was the only real problem I encountered-ranging from players using hax and exploits, to the fact that Blizzard's security measures seemed to have as many holes as a colender. If it had account security worth a damn, it'd be a formidable game indeed, and even in it's current form, it's still a very strong MMO and well worthy of respect.

And that's why I think I'll stick to my paladin. XD

I tried a warlock out for a bit, then a shaman and then a rogue, but none of them feel quite as powerful as the paladin. With my paladin, if I'm careful about it, I can beat players two or three levels above me, unless they're playing warrior or paladin, and on the odd occasion a shaman can put up a good fight. Mages can sometimes successfully run away by turning me into a chicken. :P

But as a tank, the protection paladin seems to be one of the best, if not the best, considering if you're in trouble you can simply stun your opponent and quickly heal yourself. I still need to try out the Death Knight, so I'm not sure how well they can tank. It's nice to be the focus of the group in Dungeons, though, and it's only happened twice where I got blamed for a group dying off. :P

That said, dungeons are a mixed bag. Sometimes they can be fun, if the entire group works together, but it frequently happens that players join a dungeon group and then just stand in the start area without taking part, but getting XP and coin. Or players take part, then they simply roll Need on absolutely everything. Luckily we can kick them, but by then the damage is often already partway done.

i played WoW for about 2 weeks. i was a Paladin as well. (love being a paladin in any game i can be one) i got to lvl 46, then just stopped. i got bored. i dont do PvP in games, i just do PvE. i was doing dungeons a lot and playing with a couple of friends, but after a while, i just got bored. i had played far too much in those 2 weeks too much saturation with the game that i stopped. my friend who got me into the game stopped at the same time i did, and hes expressed interest in going back (hes like lvl 60 something i think) but i have no desire to go back....the next MMO i step into will be SWTOR.
