Dual-Wielding - very annoying issue

So i have recently made a new dual-wield warrior character, which up until now has been loads of fun, but today the fun stopped, as there seems to be a bug where i cannot keep my weapons bound to hotkeys.

The problem started when i got my first two imperial swords, that were already successfully bound to 2 key, so i would press 2 twice to have swords in both hands, so i could switch between duel heals, bow, swords using 1,2,3 keys and this worked fine for a while. But after a while, if i pressed my 2 key twice, it would unbind both my weapons. Anyhow the problem seemed to have resolved itself with those particular weapons and my game continued.

Now the bug is back and won't go away. I am dual wielding 2 fine Orcish war axes and have been for some time. Just now i exit out of a dungeon and i cannot bind my weapons again. I have tried favoriting both individually, switching left and right hands for each axe, reloading a save, nothing works. I also haven't bound any game controls they are all default.

Further information:

Dual Wield: Improved weapons of the same variety (i.e. Orcish Sword Superior, Fine Steel War Axe) cannot be dual wielded through hotkeys or on the favorites menu. They will also unbind the key. (Confirmed on Xbox 360 and PC)

This information must be incorrect or incomplete because i am using Orcish war axes, furthermore i have experienced this bug with weapons with no upgrades at all (Imperial swords).

Please help if you can, before i cut off my own head with frustration. :yucky:

If you're that desperate for a solution, just get a different 2nd weapon and use 2 separate keys. I don't think if you have two of the same type of weapon (I.E Iron War Axe (2) ) it's supposed to allow you to pull them out at the same time, it just does that because they are stacked.

It is supposed to be that you can duel wield 2 weapons of the same kind, because there is no other way of equipping them without having them stacked. Also the Wiki wouldn't classify this as a bug if it wasn't intended in the game. Additionally duel wielding 2 of the same weapon works for the majority of the time, saying this isn't intended is a little naive, it's just broken is what it is lol.

Ok this problem is more severe than i first thought. Turns out i cannot dual-wield any two weapons using hotkeys anymore. Every time i switch to another weapon (bow, heals) i cannot dual wield unless i go back into the damn weapons menu and select them individually. Which mean i will spend a 3rd of my play time in the weapons menu. Talk about an immersion breaker, i cannot play like this.

I don't know why i have such an issue when i don't even use the console or mods, infuriating to say the least.

EDIT: I have found a way to keep 2 weapons bounded by favoriting both of them but only assigning a hotkey to the weapon in the right hand, this works when switching to Bow and back, but if i use healing spell, it breaks again. Guess i better stock up on potions then.

Yeah I find DW very frustrating to play in Skyrim, not only assigning weapons to keys but also because it's the only weapon style with no block or parry option - which is crazy since it's such a crucial part of the real life technique. If you assign different weapons on different keys it just swaps them out in the right hand, so either way you have to jump in and out of the favourites or inventory.

It's such a shame because it looks so damn cool.

I love duel wielding in RPGs, I almost always pick a class or playstyle that will let me dual wield at least for my first playthrough.

The mad inventory hopping would be easily solved if you could save combos to hotkeys.

Its the names. I have two imperial swords when i was doing the imperial quest (i like to dress up for the questline I am currently in). When they were still named "imperial swords" they won't keep bound to hotkeys. But when I enchanted them to fire and ice and renamed them "fireheart" and "frostbite", creating separate entries in the favorites, they kept bound.

Hey man, thanks for replying, i was begining to think i was mad or something, since there is no other people discussing it. Personally it has ruined the game for me, or at least for playing my dual-wield character. I don't know what angers me more, the problem itself or the sheer laziness of Bethesda for not even testing the already crippled UI for PC. But yeah i thought it was very weird that you can't block or at least Parry when dual-wielding. You would imagine that having two weapons would allow for advanced parrying/blocking, but nah.

Off topic:

If you are interested in a more dynamic combat style, i recommend trying a pure 2H warrior, if you haven't already. The style was really fun for me, and if you balance yourself so you're not overpowered it's very fun to fight when it requires you to land every hit and interrupt just to survive.

That's a structural issue, Bethesda should have included a way to assign two weapons to a group so they can be dual equipped at once (preferably allowing to assign what is to go in each hand). As it is now is not possible to have an ease solution. The hope is SKSE team providing support to this feature at engine level. I'm not sure if Script Dragon can do it. That hope is due the way SKSE intercepts the engine flux and actually implements new functions at engine level.

For sure Syrim UI is one the most "dumb" UI I have seen in any RPG, it is worst than older TES games ever. There is too much to enhance there and no hope it being done other than by mods (or at least is what I believe).

Still, is not only in dual weapons wielding the many problems with the UI are major, it must be integrated as a unified whole or risks incompatibilities, maybe game breaking incompatibilities among different mods.

yep i have the same issue as well. if you only use dual weild weps / bow, if you have the bow equipped, and then hit the bow hotkey again,. it will bring up your daggers together. But I use spells as well, so I just end up doing a lot of clicking...

It's just not the names, they can't be properly bound. But for some reason they can be but will eventually bug out. Let me try to explain the two instances i have come across.

1) It is possible to bind 2 identical weapons, regardless if they are upgraded or not. They can be equipped by hotkeying the stack of identical weapons and then double tapping the key you assign them to. However this might last a few hours or days, then it will no longer work. Double tapping will just un-assign them.

2) When the double tab assignment breaks/bug, You can bind 2 identical weapons or two different weapons to be dual wield by favoriting both the weapons then (while either is not currently equipped) then select each in Q menu and assign a hand, then assign a hotkey ONLY to the one in your right hand. However using a spell will break this hotkey as well, and will need to be done again.

I'm not sure what you would call it, random, broken, glitched, all of the above, but at any rate it's a horrible design.
