A call for originality

So... In the meantime, does an otherwise bare-chested female with diamond-nipples qualify for the adult filter? :wallbash:

Have a few of my elf bathing, but just her back shows. The main point if the pictures is what the NPC is doing and the comment. Would bare backs be considered nudity and have to be classified as adult ?

Well, I don't know where "Adult-Only" is specifically defined but I will give my interpretation as to it's meaning with examples of what it is and what it is not:

What Adult-Only is:

  1. Display of private parts (usually required by law in places like in USA to be covered when in the public)...this is the most obvious and easiest to identify.
  2. Sexual nature of the image. This does not mean it has to be showing a naked body, just the fact that the "purpose" is a sexual pose / nature. Example #1: fully-clothed men in an "awkward" position. Example #2: Woman with overly-large breasts fully exposed except for the very tip being covered up. Example #3: Up-the-skirt poses, etc.
  3. Excessive graphic violence. Images showing excessive blood, gore and violence. Examples: NPC/Creature eating an NPC. This is a bit harder to define as the game already contains a fair amount of violence. The key word here is excessive which is subjective by nature.

NOTE: If an image fits any of the above, it doesn't matter if it fits any of the below...it would still be considered Adult-Only.

What Adult-Only is not:

  1. Skimpy clothing. If mods are being displayed and contain skimpy clothing, this does not automatically qualify it as Adult-Only.
  2. Creative and artistic nudity. The model can be completely without clothing but if objects are covering vital areas it "might" be considered as not just Adult-Only. Reference: ??? Can't find those funny pictures but they were great.

Well, I'm too sleepy to think of any other line items...maybe more tomorrow...

I would say, anything you don't want your kids to see. If you don't have kids, well, anything that could warp the mind of the youngest generation. Of course, if it wasn't for mind-warping, some of us wouldnt be here at all huh?

Anyways, the validity of adult only content is not original the purpose of this topic. This discussion is about how to improve the image share section to make it easier to see more of what you want, less of what you don't.

OK, I've read the whole thread (and it's been a good read), so now I'll add my 2 cents to this discussion. I'm not a regular poster to Image Share, but I have been posting some pics over the past couple of weeks. For me the main reason I posted was the opportunity to get feedback on my screen shots, via the ratings and comments, and also the number of views.

What I wanted to find out was: What did people really want to see? and were any of my screens actually of interest to others? or was I just wasting my time - fooling myself into thinking I was doing something good when I wasn't?

I tried to post a variety of different types of screens. Some male and some female, some landscapes, a couple of action shots, and some scantily clad cookie cutter posing shots. I was also paying close attention to what other people were posting, and seeing the reaction to their shots: So here are some of my conclusions:

Any thumbnail where a female character is clearly visible will get an inordinate number of views. (no surprise there).

Landscapes: I had one landscape that was rated 10 by three different people, but only had 43 views. It seemed odd to me at the time. However, that seems to be normal with the image share thread. There are people who like landscapes and will rate them highly, but they appear to be very much in the minority. This was a surprise to me. Over on the Official Forms picture thread, people are always raving about landscapes, and you get the impression that they really want to see them. Well, the view count doesn't lie. There is very little interest in landscapes.

Action shots: The two action shots I posted gave very different results. One of them Keeper of the Flame had almost no hits (17). I attribute this to the fact that its thumbnail looked like crap, which is something I had not considered when I posted it. The other shot Arena Combat featuring a male character had a significant number of views while it was on the first few pages (343?). I also posted an action shot which I called Random Screenshot #2 (just wanted to see if a title made any difference to views) and it got a fair number of views and some ratings.

The picture which did the best overall Happiness is I believe was mostly because of the sky mod that was showcased in that pic.

I conclude, that as popular as the female characters are, there are a lot of people out there who want to see male characters in game situations (combat/action).

So here's my advice. If you want to change what people are posting on the thread, the best way to do it is with ratings and comments. Screenshooters are sensitive to comments made about their work. I can tell you, just from reading this thread, I'm going to think twice before I post another picture of a sunset. To make the ratings and comments work you would need to do something that some people will be very much against, and that is Allow Anonymous Ratings and Comments. We live in a very polite society and most people don't like to be too outspoken, but if you give them a chance to post anonymously they will tell you what they really think. IMO ratings should be anonymous, comments might be another matter. What I would also like to see is to allow non-members to rate and make comments. It would make for a much more interesting thread. Not only would you have good pictures to view, reading the comments would be much more enjoyable and un-predicable than it is now.

Cheers.

RGmage2 you are so correct we must have had the same thought at the same time. ( or close ).

I plead to everybody that agrees with this post ( roughly 100 ) rate the screen shot. Add a comment. whether it is good or bad. Its time to get rid of the crap and start seeing some good screenshots. ( Nude or otherwise. ) SO PLEASE RATE THE IMAGES.

Put it this way. if you cant afford a premium mebership ( like me ) or just dont want one. As a nice thing to do ( not saying you must ) is rate what you can rate and comment on what you can comment on. This is a Nice garden,...But it needs some weeding. Badly!

I have changed my opinion a bit. If it contains nudity as in good taste then great post it. But come on , if it sucks, please dont post it.

And if you really dont want to see that stuff turn on the censorship when you look at images.

Remeber to rate the stuff. Let your opinions fly. The Moderators keep the site safe, and clean and what not.( they moderate, they dont operate.) But the people who post things and keep coming are the ones who really run it. So if you want the "kids" who post crap. to run it then by all means keep quite. BUT if you want the "kids" who post good stuff, to run it, then by all means use the comment and rating thingy. Either in the image thing or when you download a mod.

And dont just give it a 10 unless it deserves it. 8,9 are great also. and add a comment, dont be afraid of giving or taking critism. Utilize it.

And RGmage2 as far as your last paragraph there goes, great idea and i think you hit the nail on the coffin. That and allowing Guest to rate the images might draw in some more members and stuff.

Here are some more of my 2-cent penny thoughts:

Analyzing the Image Share right now means you are analyzing the people who are currently dominating that area which are those that go there to see nudity/naked pics. So whatever stats you glean will be fairly skewed toward that end. I truly think it would be a completely different experience if one could browse the image share based on what they wanted to see...such as wanting to see just character pics (like the wildly popular ESF character thread), or just mod-related pics or just pr0n. ;)

As for anonymity, I as a moderator think it would be a BAD situation. The file ratings were initially setup as anonymous because you could not see who voted and were not required to leave a comment. There were tons of sewer votes all over the place and moderators simply could not keep up (and still have not cleaned up all the trash votes). But once people were exposed to how they were voting and required to leave a comment, the total amount of trash votes seemed to almost completely evaporate. You don't see this much from a normal downloading-user standpoint but for uploaders and moderators alike, the removal of anonymity was a blessing.

  • 3 weeks later...

I wouldn't think so.

However, as I normally stay away from the Image Share, I don't really know what the deleted images were.

For all I know they all could have been half nude anime elves.

On a different note, it looks like Floydian1 used SonicEther's Beaming Sunglare.
