FPS Drop in Mechanist's Lair When Looking In Certain Direction

Ever since I entered the Mechanist's Lair I've gotten some serious FPS drops, from 35-40 FPS all the way down to 10-8, but it's only when I was looking in a certain direction. After defeating the Mechanist and using the TCL command, I think I've pinpointed the culprit, or at least its location:

This rack of brain jars above a grate, in the room just outside the last room where you meet the Mechanist (Note: the number on the top left corner is my current FPS).

Here's where I used TCL to hover up to face the jars from the front. I tried using the console to disable the jars, but it did nothing to stop the FPS drop. I also couldn't delete the metal tracks or clamps holding the jars, so I guess they're not the culprit.

I walked forward a bit more, towards the back of the little tunnel they were coming out of, still getting less than 12 FPS. It wasn't until I walked through the black wall behind them that my FPS jumped up to the 20-30's.

This here is what's behind the black wall. As you can see my FPS has increased (not by much, but better than before). So I think this black wall is the culprit, whatever it is.

I've found it in the Creation Kit via the Render Window and am now going to try and disable it somehow, or at least move it out of the way. If anyone has any advice on what to do let me know- I'll post with an update as soon as I can.

EDIT: Okay, it's not that black wall. I disabled it in the Creation Kit and I still get bad lag. It seems to be something between that wall and the Mechanist's Lair room, perhaps some kind of environmental effect like fog or something causing an FPS drop. I don't know, it's so frustrating!

If anyone has any advice or ideas, please post them. Until then I'll keep trying.

Brother, this game is poorly optimized. It has memory leaks. What it seems like is a culling issue. It happens all over the game.

I can get 30 fps in downtown boston, turn a corner and my fps tank to 9. I can be out in the wilderness and rocking a steady 60, come over 1 hill and suddenly it tanks to 15 for no discernable reason.

Its a crying shame about how bad it is, because I played FO4 on my xbox first before I played it on PC, and it never ran this badly on my xbox, and my xbox is nowhere near as powerful as my PC.

Tried everything from turning settings down, to ini tweaks. In some places in this game, it runs like cold molasses, and other times it runs so well you'd swear it wasnt a Bethesda game.

It might help if you clean your masters in FO4Edit. When you look in the direction of DRs (deleted references) it may cause some of your fps drop. Even if I'm wrong about that it would still help your game. Errors in game (which you can't fix) may cause this as well. As a rule, never delete anything in CK. Much better to disable or sink out of site. I have read u can seriously screw your game if you start deleting things.

Huh, well that stinks. Is there a mod for that, or is that something beyond a regular modder's abilities?

Oh don't worry, I didn't delete anything, merely disabled it. I also tried disabling all the interior fog/haze effects, but that didn't effect it much.

I'll try cleaning my masters tomorrow morning; might be worth a shot.

There is this for Culling issues, in settlements mainly, but technically, The Mechanist Lair is considered a a settlement.

One of the other issues with the performance is that Bethesda didn't bother to make special objects. They simply sank entire chunks of something into a wall, or the ground to create the object or effect they wanted, which means under and outside the floor and walls, there are going to be lots of extra fluff to load alongside what is already seen.

Dynamic lighting also seems to be an issue. So much dynamic lighting effects on things that do no need dynamic lighting. Same with dynamic shadows.

doesn't help that this game loads up the CPU for all your shadow handling needs, which means lag spikes and fps drops because no matter how powerful the cpu, it will never be as responsive as your graphics card at handling the load.

What I wish a modder could do, is to turn all shadows in downtown as static, instead of dynamic, as I believe that would be a huge relief performance wise in the downtown area.

Personally, outside of the mission for the Mechanist, I never set foot in that area afterwards simply because of how bad the performance is there.

I had the same issue and dealt with it by updating one mod and removing another. (Both were impacting my performance, but I can't remember which exactly was the culprit in the Mechanist's Lair.)

If you're using Scrap Everything, make sure you either use the DLC-free version or disable the Scrap Everything Automatron esp.

Also, if you use Fallout 4 HD Reworked Project Revised, try uninstalling it. This mod can cause area-specific fps drops.

Hope this helps!

im just suffering through. but i have to admit. going through the whole place strafing to the left to avoid looking certain directions is..... annoying.

i have subway runner and HotC installed. could it be one of those messing with me?

Hi

I tested the area with my i7 2500k rig & i7 6700k rig & get 60fps everywhere. Usually in badly optimized areas the i7 2500k rig drops into the high 30s low 40s & the i7 6700k rig drops into the high 40s low 50s.

CPU usage advantages 26% but peeks to 34% when looking in the directions indicated. This is a full 10% lower than my Boston average.

I/O, GPU usage & vram stay steady in the lair.

There may be something else at play. Sometimes I get really bad frame rate in some interiors with my GTX 1080. To get rid of it I have to save, get out of the game & reboot. When I load the save the frame rate is back it normal. With some driver updates this problem can get really bad.

Thanks to the GForce forums I learn that it was my GPU was not throttling up to meet demands. I had to wait for a driver to fix it.

Something like what I experienced may be happening to you.

I don't know about AMD but some Nvidia driver updates do not like this game.

Later
