esmith
Hi All, I want to change the equipment on a follower, Lydia. How do I do this? In Oblivion you could open a window that showed what a follower/companion was equipped with and everything was exchangeable, but I can't figure out how to swap out gear in Skyrim. Also, I want to name my horse.... any way to do this? Thanks everybody! PS: What a GREAT game this is! Edited January 22, 2012 by esmith
Guss
They have a certain set of gear they can use, and you can give them stuff with the inventory dialogue. but cloth, light armor, or heavy armor. like a mage can't use steel but a heavy armor wearer can. but it might be changed in a mod when the CS comes out idk. had a few times i gave my follower staffs but a 2hand welder and they only used the staffs, it was funny watching them. Now, you can call me dense, but I haven't noticed that Lydia's included in the inventory window... So do I just select something in my inventory and then drag/drop it on her? This is what I'm having trouble figuring out...
Guss
" I would like to trade some things with you" or something like that then you have both inventories, go to your items then for me its " R " when i hover the mouse over the item to give. Then if they can use or its better than what they have its auto equip. Also you can use them as banks " item storage when you roaming around " Edited January 22, 2012 by Guss
pekkape
You use the R-key when you want to give someone something. The differebt choices are shown in the left bottom side of the menu (All menues that is). There are several mods that will help you to remove the standard equipment that companions are wearing, that are usually invisible.

Would you happen to know offhand what mods I could use?
bben46
If you scroll down in her list of conversation topics you will find one that is something like: "We need to trade gear." You can then treat Lydia as a container and remove things and add things - this is handy when you get overloaded as well. Although Lydia does whine a little when you do this. ;D That works for giving her new gear. But, she will only wear it if the new item is a better armor class - magic is not considered in the followers selection of what to wear. So, Lydia will continue to wear her default armor if you give her a nice outfit to wear around the house. If you can take away the default gear, then the follower will wear whatever the highest armor rated outfit they have. So if the item you give is rated zero, they may just run around in their undies as that is the same zero rating as that nice dress you spent 100 Septums on as a gift for her. There are several mods that address this apparent oversight and allow you to remove her default gear or force her against her will to wear something else. I expect to see a better solution soon after the CK is released.
pekkape
Well I don't as you should look for yourself in the modsection really:Start in Categories\Companionshttp://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/cat.php?id=66 It's not my job to look through all 57 companion files for you.... ;) All categories are found herehttp://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/index.php All the latest 100 mods (Well it comes 50-100 mods daily here)http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/latest.php A good tip as well is that you install NMM, to make it much easier to add and remove mods. Its a shame that it is not easy to find this link really.http://www.skyrimnexus.com/content/modmanager/ Edited January 22, 2012 by pekkape
