Mages: No Armor vs. Light vs. Heavy ??

You can't dual-cast dragonhide, you can't dual-cast any master spell because the master spells take up both hands.Also, stability only increases the duration of alteration spells by 50%, not 100%, the max duration for dragonhide is 45 seconds.

 

Can I extend the duration of dragonhide with fortify alteration potions?

Most likely, I've never tried since I've never focused on alchemy.I'm almost certain you can though, I would be quite surprised if you couldn't.

Sorry about my fail-maths. Despite the animation, it appears that Dragonhide can be dual-cast for a total time of 99 sec.

 

Base: 30s

Stab: 45s

Dual Cast: 66s

Stab+DC: 99s (45s [from Stab] * 2.2 = 99)

Dragonhide also cannot be cast while moving, has a long cast time, and can be inerupted. It essentially armor caps the player. Because its duration is so short and its clunky to use, I use ebonflesh 90% of the time at 52 on master. Note in the spell calculations that it CAN be dual casted, despite the misleading animations. When holding both spell casting buttons, Dragonhide jumps to 99 seconds with stability perk.

Someone please confirm or deny this, as I've never heard of anyone being able to dual-cast master-level spells, and I just started over on my mage.

Once I got the archmage robes and the Modekai (or whatever it's called) I split between none and light. Once I hit 100 for enchanting I'm gonna dual enchant the crap out of an ebony armour set and just let someone wail on me while I heal to get the skill increase. Ebonflesh is definitely good too. What kinda mage specialist is it gonna be?

Well if we're going by old TES rules that would be a sorcerer: a mage who wears heavy armor but doesn't use any physical weapons.

Dragonhide is a joke. Once I got it, I was almost immediately sorry I wasted the perk point for Master Alteration. I went back to using Ebonyflesh. FYI, you *can* dualcast it, but it takes a crazy amount of magicka, even with the Master Alteration perk.

 

I think I'm going to ignore Mage Armor next time I do a mage character. Once you max enchanting, you can use whatever armor you like and I ended up regretting those three points I put into Mage Armor. Build a truckload of daggers to max out smithing, drink a Forify Smithing potion, improve some armor to the armor cap, then enchant it to eliminate the cost of casting spells from whichever two schools of magic you use most.

Ebonyflesh only provides 42.3% of damage reduction, provided that this is coupled with 3/3 Mage Armor. If not, it only provides 14.1% reduction. This might be useful for lesser minions, Dragonhide (and a quick couple of mana potions) can turn the fight in your favour when going up against bosses.

But without the perks in the armor tree and smithing, even with enchanting and alchemy I don't think you'll reach armor cap using physical armor.
