MeanThanatos
I think I have an idea on how to get messages about being able to purchase your own hold. Just use the currier to trigger a questline to meet a "contractor or some such." Even better, build a derelict building (something fairly large and old but not quite a castle or a fort) and the currier could have a message for you that reads, "We have noticed your increased standing in Skyrim. We, the Jarls of Skyrim, have decided to bestow a hold unto you. It is located at (insert destination). However, it has been occupied by some (insert enemy) for some time. If you wish to claim this hold, you must clear out (insert enemy) beforehand. Once (insert enemy) has been taken care of, we will dispatch a house carl to assist in the renovations and improvements of your hold. The house carl will also assist you with hiring guards and servants to assist in your daily endeavors. We wish you luck. The Jarls of Skyrim." This way you would only need to voice one NPC, the house carl. The house carl could also be used to collect the taxes from you to pay to the king, but also used to dispatch collectors on your behalf to collect from the properties that you own. Just an idea. thedemoninside
First post edited for clarity. I thought about the idea of renovating an existing fort, but a new patch of land removes 99% possibility of a conflict. I do really like the idea of a courier giving you the letter from the Jarl. Maybe on character creation a courier could give you a note after purchasing your first shop that lets you know what you need to start constructing your keep. Brailiem
This sounds like a very neat thing, would go nicely with mods that add gold sinks, such as the need to repair items or something.
MeanThanatos
I wouldn't suggest renovating something that already exists. I would definitely start something from scratch, but have it look seriously run down to start. Then as it gets renovated, you could have changes that show improvements happening on a step by step basis. After the initial hold is then taken care of, you could start to have new buildings built and inhabited. As a side note, I would recommend building something that already has a wall surround the hold. I would make the hold an instance for the sake of not having something large and new forced into the open world of skyrim. This would also allow the step by step process of change to happen every time you come and go from town, much akin to when you purchase improvements for your home from the house carl. Having an instanced hold would also allow you to build something on a very grand scale. If you even wanted to take it even further, you could literaly build a large gate through a "mountain pass" that would bring you to a whole new area. I'm not just talking about another city or town. I'm talking about fields and mountains, caves, dwemer ruins, etc. Populated with wild animals, bandit camps, etc. If this new area was created, it could become a modder's playground. It would be a good place for other modders to create their own quests, dungeons, etc. This area could be surrounded by impassible mountains except for the one mountain pass. Â Then again.... I'm probably just starting to ramble in my excitement about possibilities. Although I do believe that this would be a good test of a market system without altering the existing towns in Skyrim. Your own hold. Your own castle, your own city and your own surrounding towns.
Collers
Lol I was playing this afternoon and had the bright idea that there are already hundreds of forts that could be done over to suit your needs. I can see I was beaten to the punch though. Better luck next time Collers.
thedemoninside
There was a tower I found that looked broken down, was pretty much on the peak of a small mountain, and had non hostile NPC's labeled "Guard". I thought it was kind of strange, because they had no leader and werent really guarding anything. While this would be damn near perfect as a spot to use for this mod, what if Bethesda decided they were going to expand it through DLC? This is why I feel it is best to use the large area northwest of Falkreath, just south of Rorikstead. There is a pretty good section of land there that doesnt have any caves or other map labeled areas of interest. I'm thinking build a plateau there, with a path to the top, and the walls and back side of the keep could line up perfectly with the edges of the plateau just so it looks nice. Then you have a self contained space within the world that would be perfect for a mod like this.
BananaThug
That would DEFINITELY be an awesome addition!
thedemoninside
There definitely seems like this mod has enough interest to get made. Other people are posting similar ideas.
imagangsta101
yeah i think this mod should be made because whats the point in investing in a shop because your basically just giving your money away so the shopkeeper has more money, which is kind of stupid, so i was thinking why not just be able to invest your money to co-own/own the shop and earn money on a weekly basis. i do like the think about owning 3-5 shops then you get a quest that would allow you to buy more land, that was a good idea :)
