GrindedStone
It's like a 52 page thread omg! One fella found that it was a write protection issue dealing with the config data an save games located in My documents/my games/fallout 3 So I believe what he did was right click that folder an change the read only status, but there was something about allowing access to all users. I'll post it. From page 3 I took ownership of the C:\Users\*YOURNAME*\Documents\My Games\Fallout3 folder and gave my username full read/write privileges. I Started a new game and it was past the hang. Save games from Vista work too A few posts down Right your Documents folders, go to security make sure Administrators, and Users, have full access, then go to the My Games folder do the same, then fallout 3 folder and do the same. If that don't work backup the Fallout 3 Folder, delete and see if the game can recreate it. If that works just cut and paste your saves. GrindedStone
Smartyeyeball said on Page 4 These are the steps I took to get it working in the default folder location. x64 Version. Right Clicked on the Fallout3 folder in C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Fallout3 and selected properties>security>edit>add then typed in users and gave both my user name and users all permissions. You really only need to give permission to the Fallout3 Folder itself. Any files and sub-folders should have the same permission properties. Even though I have allowed my username and users full access, the read only box remains ticked, yet it's still got access. Fallout3.exe also needs to be "Run as Admin" in the compatibility tab. Another fella swears by running the game in windowed mode below that. Edited January 26, 2012 by GrindedStone
GrindedStone
A guy on page 10 said to try using the 1.1.0.35 patch that is like so old omg... It's got dust an grey hair. It might not be compatable with all mods or tools we use but Nexus still has a copy of it. I'm not sure you could backwards patch though. 1.1.0.35 LOL :D They also said that it doesn't even need compatability mode, but I'm not sure I can read anymore past page 10 right now. theophantus
I have no idea what that troubleshoot program thing is. Compatability mode was from Vista, an should be obvious. Was there an option to "run in" or "run as" You might have to find someone that knows more about it in Win7. Are you launching with FOMM, installed FOSE, GFWL disabler? Have you installed both the 64 an 32 bit versions of Visual C++? Did you patch it to 1.7? K-lite 32 an 64 bit audio codec packs? Questions Questions OMG! See if there is windows help for compatablity mode. Holy s***. Do I have to do all these things. The game is patched to 1.7 through windows live. I will try these suggestions, once I understand what they are. If I still have no joy, I will bin the disc and go and buy New Vegas and try that. GrindedStone
Saw one fella that switched his desktop back to classic an it let em play FO3. Another person said to get direct x 2008, there was no link but I reckon that might be direct x 9 end user runtime, you use direct x 10-11 though, so I focus on updating that first, it's from microsoft. From Steam Support If you are having trouble running Fallout 3 on Windows 7 please do the following: 1. Navigate to your Fallout 3 folder (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 3)2. Right click on fallout3.exe 3. Click Properties4. Click on the Compatibility tab5. Check the box "Disable desktop composition"6. Launch Fallout 3 from the .exe or from Steam Stopped again on Page 16 Edited January 26, 2012 by GrindedStone
theophantus
Posthumously changed to better information via specialist due to the complex nature of the problem.Fallout 3 Windows 7 @ Windows 7 Forums I give up! 5 days I've been trying to play this game. I've never had a problem like this, ever, and I've played some games, right back to the first time Doom came out! I've been modding Sins of a Solar Empire for the last year, check out Sci-fi At War. So I know my way around a little bit. I wanted to have a go at modding something different and I can't get this flipping game to work. Does anybody think I will get the same problem if I went and got New Vegas?
