Player home CTD

I've had the same problem with player homes since I first installed Skyrim. With the sole exception of Breezehome, every time I try to enter a player owned home, I CTD. For a while now, I have been ignoring the problem, and just using Breezehome, but now, I can't buy children's beds for some reason (the transaction is completed, along with the standard dialogue, but nothing happens. the child beds are listed as "([...])" in the price list. I don't know the cause or how to fix that).

Anyway, I need to know if there's a fix or mod that will stop the CTD when attempting to enter player homes. I have the same problem running vanilla or modded.

Have you already tried wiping your game installation and re-installing? If so, did you try to use an old save? Saves from previous games can contain all sorts of corruption, usually caused by un-installing mods.

Here is some more info that might help you in the long run. This troubleshooting guide is by darstyler. Please give him a kudo if you find it useful.

Here is a list of things you may do to stabilize your game :

/// Useful informations :

/// Load order / mods conflicts :

/// Settings / memory :

  • Have you installed the skse patch ? >> memory blocks log.

  • Backup your ini files and delete the files. Skyrim.ini / SkyrimCustom.ini / SkyrimPrefs.ini found in C:\Users\Utilisateur\Documents\My Games\Skyrim then use your vanilla launcher to autodetect and use best settings for your computer.

/// Cleaning and correcting potential bugs :

  • Clean your master files to eliminate potential problems.: Gopher's videos cleaning your masterfiles on the Nexus Tesedit page.
    Start Tes5edit, simply untick everything, (right-click/select none) and add only a tick to the esm/esp you want to check + update.esm, Tesedit knows what to do and will load all the dependencies automatically.
    - Begin with loading only Skyrim + update, ITM / UDR + save ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Dawnguard, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Hearthfire, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Dragonborn, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.

  • The method above can be used to clean mods. If I'm correct LOOT should tell you which plugin you should clean. You may load all your mods with Tes5edit and use the (right-click in the left pane) apply filter to show conflict losers. Wait till Tes5edit has finished. Caution : don't try to modify anything while using this filter, it's not intended for.

  • In the left pane, Expand the subsections and examine conflicts. Once an entry is expanded to the bottom and selected, the right pane shows which mods modify the entry. The last one on the right is the last loaded in your load order and the conflict winner.

  • Expand the following subsections, depending on where the problems occur. Cells for CTDs inside buildings, grottos, etc... and worldspace for exterior. The goal is to target mods that edit the same places and conflict. Open the bloc note and write those mods.

  • Once done, close Tes5edit and open each mod with Tesedit, one by one and use the UDR cleaning procedure (Gopher's videos cleaning your masterfiles on the Nexus Tesedit page) to ensure all the deleted references will be transformed in disabled references = no CTDs from this point.

  • If you suspect a mod in particular, using the conflict looser / winner method above, you can decide to change its load order or uninstall it.

/// Save game :

/// Meshes healer :

  • Read here, this is potentially a cause of CTD that you can resolve by following the mod procedure on this page.

I've gone through all of the troubleshooting I can find. I've cleaned all of my mods, removed problem mods, stripped it down to vanilla, etc. etc. etc. None of the fixes that I have found that are supposed to take care of the problem have solved it. Even with EMB for low performance systems, I still have the same problem.

Ok so from the top do you have all DLC? Yes lets move forward go to Steam verify the installed game and its DLC.

Next verify load order only Skyrim and DLC

1) Skyrim.esm

2) Updated.esm

3) Dawnguard.esm

4) Hearthfires.esm

5) Dragonborn.esm

This load order should never be changed! Three things cause CTD: first mod conflicts, two corrupted and saves game, three lack of memory. Now before you play I strongly recommend doing your memory watch video it is a trusted guide and has save many people many headaches

After all this your game providing your computer can run Skyrim should and will play.

Thank you for that video, I watched the whole thing, and made the adjustments recommended. Unfortunately, it didn't correct my specific issue. I'm still getting a CTD with every player owned home EXCEPT Breezehome. I installed a clean player home mod (Build your own home), and after building it, I have the same issue with that home as well. I can enter every other building, and home, without any issues, but when it is a player owned home, I CTD. Usually as the interior is about to display on screen. With the Windhelm house, I actually see the interior for about a half-second before the CTD.

Since I've eliminated most memory/processing possibilities from the causes list, I'm hoping that someone might have an alternative solution. The only other thing I can think of is changing the Player homes to "unowned", but that would circumvent the adoption, which is one of the things in the game I enjoy.

I have also tried at another player's suggestion setting the weather to "clear" prior to entering the homes, but that also failed to correct the issue.

The only thing I can think of is that there are things in your skyrim and/or data folders that is causing the problem. An example would be if you use an HDT body mesh but have no compatible skeleton. The body mesh and skeleton may not have an .esp so just by disabling stuff in your mod manager you may miss them.

Good luck

If you followed my guide and you to obtain all 8 hearth-fire home did you load saves to do it? You have a corrupt game and or save you must get rid of all saved data then do my guide even re-installing Skyrim from steam. You should have no mods installed only pug-in checked stated above to get a stable game and only then can you mod.
