Random Freezing Fifteen to Twenty minutes into session

Hey, I recently got a new pc on which to play skyrim among other games. It has a gtx 1070, i7 5700, 2 tb hard drive and is connected to a 3440 by 1440 21:9 monitor. I recently installed a ton of new mods to start a new game with after losing my saves along with my previous pc but I havent been able to get Skyrim running properly. I have skse, skyui, the flawless widescreen patch, along with a host of other mods installed. Originally, I found my game refusing to open. Removing campfire and frostfall fixed this, but I still couldnt get past the into. I figured out that Helgen Reborn hadnt properly uninstalled and fixed the issue by deleting all of skyrims files and then reinstalling the game (during which I ran into a weird error where the game would not install because neither steam nor myself had the administrator privileges to delete certain files, however this soon disappeared.) Skyrim finally installed and I soon reinstalled all my mods but ran into a weird error where the game would freeze and wouldnt load past the load screen whenever I attempted to enter the Helgen dungeon in the intro. I instead tried installing alternate start but found that the game would randomly freeze after 15 or 20 minutes and I would be forced to restart my game. I have no idea what the problem is, possibly a mod conflict? Thank you for your time, any help would be appreciated. Lastly, I tried removing Civil war overhaul after finding out it had been removed and support had been dropped but the issue remained nonetheless.

Un-installing mods mid-game is usually the source of all sorts of problems. Even if you're starting a new game (not using old saves) you can still have issues due to files altered by the removed mods.

Several of your mods (Alternate Start, the "Climate" series, etc.) have VERY specific instructions on how to activate them, how to activate OTHER mods with them, etc. Not to sound condescending but, have you RTM? By way of example, some mods recommend not activating the mod until you've either exited Helgen, or AFTER character creation if using Alternate Start, or that you MUST activate them prior to starting the game (CWO was one of those) etc, etc.

On a more practical note, before you decide to nuke from orbit and start from scratch, try reading through the following. This troubleshooting guide was created by darstyler. Please give him a kudo if you find it useful.

Here is a list of things you may do to stabilize your game :

/// Useful informations :

/// Load order / mods conflicts :

/// Settings / memory :

  • Have you installed the skse patch ? >> memory blocks log.

  • Backup your ini files and delete the files. Skyrim.ini / SkyrimCustom.ini / SkyrimPrefs.ini found in C:\Users\Utilisateur\Documents\My Games\Skyrim then use your vanilla launcher to autodetect and use best settings for your computer.

/// Cleaning and correcting potential bugs :

  • Clean your master files to eliminate potential problems.: Gopher's videos cleaning your masterfiles on the Nexus Tesedit page.
    Start Tes5edit, simply untick everything, (right-click/select none) and add only a tick to the esm/esp you want to check + update.esm, Tesedit knows what to do and will load all the dependencies automatically.
    - Begin with loading only Skyrim + update, ITM / UDR + save ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Dawnguard, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Hearthfire, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.
    - Then load Skyrim + update + Dragonborn, ITM / UDR + ctrl +s and close.

  • The method above can be used to clean mods. If I'm correct LOOT should tell you which plugin you should clean. You may load all your mods with Tes5edit and use the (right-click in the left pane) apply filter to show conflict losers. Wait till Tes5edit has finished. Caution : don't try to modify anything while using this filter, it's not intended for.

  • In the left pane, Expand the subsections and examine conflicts. Once an entry is expanded to the bottom and selected, the right pane shows which mods modify the entry. The last one on the right is the last loaded in your load order and the conflict winner.

  • Expand the following subsections, depending on where the problems occur. Cells for CTDs inside buildings, grottos, etc... and worldspace for exterior. The goal is to target mods that edit the same places and conflict. Open the bloc note and write those mods.

  • Once done, close Tes5edit and open each mod with Tesedit, one by one and use the UDR cleaning procedure (Gopher's videos cleaning your masterfiles on the Nexus Tesedit page) to ensure all the deleted references will be transformed in disabled references = no CTDs from this point.

  • If you suspect a mod in particular, using the conflict looser / winner method above, you can decide to change its load order or uninstall it.

/// Save game :

/// Meshes healer :

  • Read here, this is potentially a cause of CTD that you can resolve by following the mod procedure on this page.
