Having EXACTLY the same issue. CTD as soon as i try to enter Whiterun for the first time. Mods on or off Doesn't matter (see below). Is latest STEAM (verified) version, Latest nvidia drivers on a 680x2gb, system has 16gb ram and is an i7 (so yes should handle it).

Verified Steam Game/install, did nothing, :wallbash:

Purged cells command did nothing,

Re-installed, did nothing. :wallbash:

Put unofficial patch on, Immediate CTD on world map

Re-installed left vanilla, played to Whiterun. CTD :wallbash:

Purged cell buffer again. Same.

Went away, Did 6 hours OOG of quests, came back, CTD on Whiterun again. :wallbash:

Put mods back, played for another hour all was fine.... until BLOODY Whiterun again.

I have no idea what is happening >.< had enough of this i just want to advance the damn storyline why the heck is this game so buggy?!?

It would seem I'm not the only one having this problem, anyone found any kind of fix yet?

:wallbash:

Okay Update and edit, found a bunch of files with weird permissions that it appears did not uninstall when i uninstalled / re-installed Skyrim. These COULD have been left over from a mod the first 2 times round. I had to MANUALLY take ownership of them and delete them (funnily enough guess what they were named.... WHITERUN.

I only discovered these after in desperation searching for files with a reference to "whiterun" in my Skyrim folder and hey there they were in the data directory.

Why they had an $unknown$ as an owner i do not know... took ownership (google it if you don't know how) Deleted them,

Reapplied my texture packs, hey presto Whiterun is NOW WORKING... WITH ALL MY MODS,

So for those having trouble with Whiterun not loading do an F3 search from windows explorer in your Skyrim directory and DELETE MANUALLY all references to Whiterun then reapply the HD towns texture pack if you are using it and it should work. At least it did for me. Hooray for perseverance.

Hope this helps someone.

I used to have this problem. I fixed by uninstalling skyrim, cleaning up drivers and then running a disk cleaner to override all deleted data 7 times. Turned out the crashes were caused by previously deleted copies of skyrim that were conflicting with the current install. This was about two months ago. 70 hours later and I haven't had a single crash and that is with 30 + mods installed and active.

Ok, doesn't sound like the greatest idea to me but if it works for you more power to you. The title of your thread is more than a little off though. NO WAY will that prevent all crashes in Whiterun or anywhere else simply because there are far too many possible mod conflicts and other issues that can cause this. So while that may work for some (it would take a LOT of research for me to even want to attempt that) it will not work for everyone.

And if I'm not using it?!Then what?

Adding to my frustration,I still haven't seen a safe and plaussible solution to this matter.

I was CTD "Crashing to Desktop" always in Whiterun, after days of searching the internet I found out that thousands of players were having the same problem, so I tried all the fixes, the 4gb patch and everything other fix out there and no luck. So I was going to give up and go back to playing "Age of Conan" and "Oblivion", so I wanted to try one more thing.> "Unpacking all the mesh files"< I used Oblivion mod manager to unpack mine but I don't think it will matter how you unpack them at least I don't think, and it worked!!! I no longer have crashes in Whiterun and can enter any door and fast travel and save with no crashes!!! well that's it I hope it will work for all those other Hundreds of thousands of Skyrim players having this issue. Let me know if it works.

P.S. If this works for a modder I would like someone to make a mod for me let me know if you will, thanks

If you want to make a mod for me you can contact me here Email me

I unpacked my Skyrim - Meshes.bsa file and I ended up with a Lodsettings folder and a big Meshes folder. What do I do next?If i copy the Meshes folder and paste it back into my Skyrim Data folder,it's gonna overwrite half of the mod meshes created in there!

When prompted, check the "Do this for the next # files" and select No, and there shouldn't be any changes in your mods.

I had trouble with and without my mod configuration as well, including entering, walking around, loading near, or even looking at mod zones near there, or anything having to do with Whiterun's exterior cell. This seems to have fixed it.
