Help with starting modding

Hi everyone. I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to anything involving computers, but I still want to take a crack at modding my next New Vegas experience for more flavour. I'm hoping someone will be willing to help me out, in between grinding their teeth at my ineptitude.

Anyway, I do have the Nexus Mod Manager installed, and for starters I'd like some advice on the basics of using it. I'd like to add some stuff to make the game more visually appealing, such as Women of the Wasteland and new clothes, but also some story stuff like Free the Slaves.

I would also, ahem, like to mess around with making the game raunchier. You know... since we can be adults about exploding heads and drug use. I've glanced at Sexual Innuendo and Humping the Mojave, but I know there's also some stuff at Loverslab. Basically I'd like suggestions on the more reliable, easier to install options.

I'm always terrified when I'm attempting anything like this on my own, for fear of messing everything up and not even knowing what I did wrong or how to fix it.

Final question, for now: Is it a fairly simple matter to uninstall a mod that isn't working, or which I want to stop using?

Now go for it folks, you get to show off how smart you are by comparison.

It's a good idea to keep a backup copy of your FNV game. That way if you totally bork something you can easily get back to a working copy. I personally keep a copy of a clean install with no mods whatsoever, and also keep a copy of my latest working configuration. It takes a bit of disk space, but most computers have gobs of disk space these days.

Just copy the Fallout New Vegas folder under your steam directory, and also copy the files in your documents folder under Games -> Fallout New Vegas (there are some settings files there that you will want to have backups of).

Most of the time, if a mod totally borks your game, all you need to do is delete that mod and you're back where you started. Most mods have an esp and maybe an esm in the data folder and then a bunch of resources in the textures, meshes, and sound folders. Some mods will overwrite existing resources though. Mod managers generally automatically back up these files for you when you install them, but a mod manager can get confused if you don't delete mods in the same order that you add them and you have multiple mods affecting the same resources. There are also some mods that need to be manually installed and the mod manager won't help you there.

Be careful discussing stuff from loverslab here on the nexus. A lot of their stuff violates the nexus terms of service (for both copyright and content) and the moderators here don't like that kind of stuff being discussed here on the nexus.
