'Many Thanks' note author?

What about Rorlund? The author of the note must have already tried to take the item from the castle by him/herself, because he knows about the way it's been locked (a dwemer puzzle lock, that not something you just guess) plus he/she must have known that it was going to be transported, because he mentions it. So he must have easy access to Castle Dour and be able to listen to or read about military transports.

I suspect Rorlund, because he seems shady to me. And he mentions Sanguine at the Bard's Festival, which I find.. well... suspicious ;D

I guess it's him or Rikke, but I think she would probably not write 'their armory' but 'the armory'

Rorlund seems the most conspicuous suspect. Rikke makes no sense because she's a legate in the Legion...the only person with easier access to Castle Dour besides her would be Tullius himself.

Romlyn Dreth.

If one reads the note, the writer knows Mercer and has had other dealings with him, and likely over a reasonably long time in order to write a note that is somewhat "friend to friend" with a level of trust between them that says "I've left your cut in the usual drop spot and might have another job for you soon." and "you need to teach me that little trick some time".

Obviously, this is not the first and not the only dealing the writer has had with Mercer. It is also likely the person is a resident of Riften in order to build the relationship and the trust that appears to exist.

Romlyn is a minor thief in Riften who would have known Mercer and likely dealt with him on jobs he (Romlyn) would not have taken on himself because of travel or difficulty. He has a job in Riften and likely isn't going to travel away and jeopardize that as selling the mead seems to be rather lucrative given he is shipping kegs of it out of Riften.

Romlyn would have dealt with many people who would have travelled through Riften (being a seller of Black Briar mead both legally and illegally) and could have heard about Chillrend being transported.

The only part that is strange is the note says "I have left your cut..." which would suggest the item had been sold or that the theft was arranged by someone and a down payment made. This leads one to believe that whomever "R" is has been approached by someone else to steal Chillrend, given a downpayment and "R" has passed the job on to Mercer.

So, who would someone looking for a thief in Riften be likely to run across in Riften? Someone from the Guild who in the cistern or Ragged Flagon, both which are generally inaccessible to someone who is not a guild member, or a thief that is out and about selling stolen mead at reduced prices?

There are few NPCs with a name beginning with "R" in Riften - my guess is its Dreth.

Forget who hired Mercer, I want to know what was stolen. Why was it locked in a Dwemer puzzle chest under guard in the Castle Dour armoury? Why was is being moved, and to where?

Actually, a good point. The note "Many Thanks" written by the mysterious "R" is only in the basement room and really doesn't have any specific information to relate it to Chillrend. For all we know Mercer owned Chillrend and the note was in reference to some other item that Mercer was engaged to steal.

I still think the note was written by Romlyn Dreth, but what the "item we discussed" was is totally unknown and probably never will be known or why it was so heavily guarded or why it was being transported or where it was being transported from or its planned final destination.

Just one more Skyrim mystery.
