ScrollTron1c
I just "finished" the game with a level 65 Breton Mage, also had a level 62 Imperial Assassin/Illusionist before and a level 20ish Nord Warrior. Now while planning my next character, i had the following thought: Doesn't choosing a race with beneficial starting skills for you desired class (e.g. an Orc for a Warrior using Smithing / 1H / Shield / Heavy Armor) actually limit your maximum level in the end, assuming you won't powerlevel unused skills?Since you will be gaining less levelups using your main skills, you can logically spend less points on perks in those trees. So my conclusion is that, ignoring other racial bonuses, the best choice for a pure Warrior would be High Elf rather than an Orc, Nord or Redguard. Seeing how they also have the highest run speed and jump length makes them even more favorable . Edited February 7, 2012 by ScrollTron1c
gsmanners
It's a trade-off. You nerf your max to get more out of the middle (you know, the part of the game where you're actually having fun).
BrknSoul
I started a dual-wielding assassin/sneak-thief using the Breton race (+10 Conj, +5 Alch, Alter, Illus, Resto, Speech)I'm having a lot more fun (I'm a couple of level shy of 30), than I did with my Sniper Bosmer. The first few levels were a little challenging, as I didn't have the Sneak advantage, but that's all part of the fun. There's nothing like taking out a room full of bandits with nothing but shadows and a dagger, without them knowing you're there.
TimF
I have to disagree... It all depends on what you want. If you are playing with certain magic schools for example, you would desire to avoid gaining too much levels. Personally, I always have leftover perks after choosing what I desire and leveling needed skills even with the most "optimal" race. Anyway, gaining skills at low level (from 15 to 25) yields very few exp, and eventually becomes unnoticeable when you are at 60+ or something, and also very easy to level. The really important features of races are their perks and bonuces: +50 magicka is very important for anyone investing in it, and completely useless for a pure warrior. Highborn ability or berserk state can save the day for a mage and a warrior, and inapplicable the other way around.

Argonians would make the best warriors if your ignoring skills...and are skeptical of the scale bonuses. Dont mean to sound too much like an ass though just saying. Your right though to some extent. All in all though Race is a choice best left to personal favorites.
ScrollTron1c
Anyway, gaining skills at low level (from 15 to 25) yields very few exp, and eventually becomes unnoticeable when you are at 60+ or something, and also very easy to level. That's pretty much my point - if you're skilling from 15 to 25 starting at level 1, you'll get like what, 4 levelups alone from this? While another race which already starts at 25 in that skill is simply gonna miss out on those levelups, and in turn can't put any perks into that tree. So no matter if the game gets much more difficuilt early on, the thread was only about wether or not choosing a class-friendly race would nerf your "final" level or not. Brandy1123
the first 2 times through, I tended to go after everything. Power struggle to be the hero of legend. The last 3 times were for fun. I did 1 faction and statyed with it. The hardest by far, but the most enjoyable was my Bosmer. I used the storyline to make the choices I did to play her out. That being, she was captured doing nothing more then being across some line (or being close to it) on a map. She was sentanced to death for nothing and treated like a marked criminal. Using that, I NEVER once entered a town or village. Everything i got was from finding it, stealing it or making it at remote craft stations. I opted to not murder anyone but did, of course defend myself. I got to level 42 and it became pretty unplayable. Since the strongholds I considered towns and the greybeards i opted to not do, it got difficult. Some of the ore locations had the glitch where the grahpic showed up, but the ore would not harvest. Since the drgaons never show up til the dragon stone is returned, I ended up consoling the quest up to spawn the dragons. All the items that became quest persistant in my inventory, i consoled away. It makes the game very different and difficult from the vanilla play style. I did not do the main quest. There were few quests that can be done, but more then you might believe. (oops, wrong topic. sorry) Edited February 7, 2012 by Brandy_123
kradus
This is another good reason to be a breton warrior.

Dont mean to sound too much like an ass though just saying. Damn! :PNow i'm actually considering Argonian as well, although i'm not quite sure if the daily power can make up for the lesser run speed. At least from playing a female Breton which probably runs 5% slower than average, i always wondered why i had such a hard time outrunning certain monsters or bosses, until i read about this "feature" on the wiki. And Altmer run a whopping 8% faster than average, which equals the "run speed" enchantment in WoW - quite a lot compared to the 1% that Argonians get.
