Lisselli
I couldn't do it with Oldrim's CK. Did it all the time with Skyrim CK 64. I do it with Fallout's CK. Render Window = Basically the game running in a "size it yourself" screen. Not good with the game itself running.

The CK is made to be running both game and editor at the same time for on the fly testing.
scrivener07
8gig of ram here too. I can run multiple CKs and play the game at the same time with no issues on Skyrim, Skyrim64, and Fallout 4.
BlahBlahDEEBlahBlah
Yep, it can be done. Successfully doing so depends highly upon *your* system, however, and the best way to know is to try. Worst that can happen is it crashes and you don't do it anymore.I'd love to be more helpful in this, just that there are so many variables.Point is, the option exists and you should try it out because it can be very helpful when modding. As for the pseudo side-track of the topic:A system is so much more than RAM....arguments of xRAM vs yRAM vs zCPU vs nVGA are just odd to me, and I feel that we should know better than to compare systems based on one component by now (especially a component which isn't even actually "one" component, or at least *very* rarely "one"). Edit: Edited the entire comment to *hopefully* better relay my thoughts.
greekrage
Ram is the key issue but another equally important issue is Virtual memory and that should be set to not less than 12Gb (most setups are preset to max 8Gb or depending on ram and HDD free space) . Many times peoples setups start to crash for no reason but they fail to look at their main HDD space that has run out causing virtual memory to shrink to unusable sizes.(this happens a lot for users like myself that have a small SSD as a main drive ) Edited April 19, 2017 by greekrage
N7R
I did not know this. Been building my custom weapon and every time I'd make a small change in CK I'd save and close the program then open up fallout 4. The program takes a long time to load my mod so its a long process of having to change small decimal numbers over and over again reopening the CK then going back in game. I had to even get a mod that removes the beth and special loading since it was such a waste of time waiting for the main menu to load in.
blackbirdwanderer
The original question that started this thread is a great example of those questions we've all seen. The "this may be a dumb question, but . . ." but as we can see, if you've wondered it, someone else probably has too and putting the question out there often helps others. Team win. The other side of the coin is that when someone posts a question, be as helpful as you can! We've all benefited from others' feedback so pay it forward. There are some amazing examples on this site of very skilled and experienced people who really go out of their way to assist modders who are learning, and I applaud them! kitcat81
Sure it`s ok, though the game should be restarted for saving the changes and for making them show up.
speedynl
i always leaved the ck open when fooling around, depending on wat you change you can see it directly make changes mina ck start game looks good or not, exit game go back to work, only after xx times the game refuse to start prolly running out of mem(i have 16g) at a certain moment(and depending where you mod in the game),(mid boston take 2 times longer to load as a sample), close ck, start again go back to work, it works fine this way
