getting started with Morrowind

After I'm done with my current Oblivion playthrough, I may want to install Morrowind. I have Morrowind and both expansions sitting by waiting to be installed.

So then... first, do I need to do anything special to get the game working right in windows 7 64-bit? Second, what are the essential programs and utilities I should have on hand? Third, what are the most essential mods? Gameplay improvements, quest add-ons, beautification mods...

I also understand that Daggerfall is freeware and Bethesda offers it for download. Anything besides DOSbox that will let me run it?

1. Run Morrowind as an administrator, or it will almost certainly crash and give you a message like 'failed to load snowflake.nif'.

2. MGE and MWSE are both good to have. They're the Graphics Extender and the Script Extender, respectively. The MGE gives you quite a few options for making the game look good. If you have a high-end pc, I recommend the Total Graphics and Sounds Overhaul 2.0

3. The XLEngine is a modern attempt to let people play Daggerfall on Windows operating systems at high resolutions. It's not done yet, and many features are still missing, but it functions.

You may also want to download the Unofficial Morrowind Patch which fixes over a thousand bugs. You can find it here.

The UMP has evolved in the last couple of years, and is now the Morrowind Patch Project. I agree, it's one of the two most important mods you can add to your game. Good catch.

The other one is the Morrowind Code Patch. It includes tons of fixes, as well as optional features--such as my personal favorite, Swift Casting, which allows you to cast a spell Oblivion-like, with a weapon in hand. It also fixes saved game corruption, which happened regularly when mods were added or removed from a game already in progress. A must-have mod.
