I can't understand why necromancy is so popular in the Skyrim univ

Most undead minions you raise have a hard-as-hell time of actually DOING anything that it's almost useless.

I decided to create a new build recently (2 handed + conjuration, focusing on undead). While playing said build, it became apparent that, for the most part, undead minions are useless unless you're REALLY selective about what you raise.

Many undead minions will hang back a mile away, or try to go another path to catch up with you (a path that isn't even open). I had one recently (a fellow necromancer) that would ONLY cast ward spells. It wasn't until we got to the end of the dungeon (and he finally caught up) that he pulled out a dagger and tried to use it.

Falmer are horrible minions. They always hang back, and rarely attack in any timely fashion.

The AI for necromancy summons is just plain awful. I sure hope when I get my Thrall spell that they retain some useful AI.

An advice for necromancy users: use console to retain your thralls and teleport them to your location.

Necromancy is popular, because your thralls are much stronger and more convenient in battle, then any other alternatives. In my experience, AI casters are very proficient with combining wards, restoration and destruction magic. Personally, I use aeromancers/pyromancers, not necromancers, who seem to be unable to resurrect undead when enthralled and rely on inefficient cold. And vampires, of course. These would outperform any followers.

RP-wise, people research necromancy in order to get info from the dead, create small armies and learn how to become immortal. As a game mechanic, necromancy sucks in general until you get dead thrall for semi-permanent zombie followers. Then you can cherry pick the best corpses with the best AIs, making them the best conjurations in the school.

Considering we last saw her 200 years ago, you may very well be able to skip the killing part. There may not be much left for the honeymoon but at least all you may need is a shovel and a sack to pick her up.

Thank you so much. I have a shovel and am ready to go. I will send you an invite to the wedding. I'm sure she won't have anything to say about it.
