Can this be done without a script?

Recommended Posts

Ah, I'm late to this and I see you've got most of it figured out. It sounds very realistic, and I like that. I did some googling and, though there is a lot of variety in the results, it seems parrafin lamp oil is burning anywhere from 1/4 oz to 1.5 oz per hour, or roughly 7 to 44 ml / hr. Seems a small, handheld flask, should be good for 8-12 oz, so about 4-6 hrs, or an average evening, not including sleep time, if you go with the concept of dirtier, less efficient oil at .5/hr.

That's a rough, wild guess, only aided by google. :)

Seems like it would be way too much trouble to find every spilled/leaking oil pot in the game, and give it a lootable, but it might be something easily bought from merchants. Chesko's Campfire mod has some stone-striking fire animation, done via power rather than spell. He considers it a modder's resource, if there's anything in that setup that isn't scripted and might be helpful.

Hi thumb,

So a whole day in Skyrim is about an hour and 20 minutes, so 1 hour in Skyrim would be about 3.33 minutes so the lantern should be set to 16.3 minutes but we can put 2 level of oil quality like one cheap and affordable and one more expansive top quality oil that last longer.

I agree with you placing oil flask everywhere would take way too long so the merchant is the ideal solution here. Never thought about the Chesko camp fire but i will get a look at it to see if it could be of any use.

The effort put in this mod is insane....

Yes, but I am sure it will be worth it. Just seeing the lantern models, I know you have talent.

Thank my friend and i will proudly put you in the credit of the mod page and this forum need more people like you!

I just finish the oil flasks here a preview without texture and i made them as potions since it is also working and it feel more logical to have oil flask in potion than in scroll.

Those look amazing. I wish I had even half that talent. Also, thank you for your kind words about the credits. I am unworthy! :D

You are the only one with fore who participate in the thread and you are still here since the beginning pushing around idea and helping me designing the mod mechanics so in my book you are worth to be in the credits!

We also have a very talented modder giving a hand on something that could make this mod even more awesome so let's wish him luck with the test he will do soon.

Thank you. That is very kind.

I can't wait to see what the surprise is!!

I was thinking, my gf found a 19th century writing on google books, about whale oil vs hog oil. It said a whale oil lamp (with about 8.5 oz oil) will burn consistently for 4 hrs, where a hog oil lamp will burn well for about 2, then the light will become dim and dirty. Skyrim doesn't have whales, but it has horkers. If you were looking for a non-purchase way to collect, I don't think many other mods touch the horker, so it could possibly become a horker death item. That would give you a one-stop place to assign a lootable, without having to modify a bunch of cells, and should be reasonably safe from conflicting with other mods.

Hi thumb,

Can we say synchronicity here? When i was modeling the oil flask i was thinking about the horker as the best oil source and also to make a new oil recipe but it will all depend on what system we will end up using for the final lantern and this mostly depend upon the result our friend is working on.

Make sense to have dirty cheap oil lasting less time and having dimmer light type and this is easy to tweak on the light setting, so cheap oil could have 512 Radius and a 800 Fade and quality oil 1200 Radius with a 1500 Fade.

So cheap oil would last 8:00 min and quality oil 16.3 min also it would make sense to have biggest merchant supply of quality oil where the horkers are abundant.

And as for cost i have in mind 30 for the cheap oil and 60 for the top quality, not sure about the right price so suggestions are welcome.

Ha. Synchronicity is awesome.

Pricing is difficult for me, in Skyrim, because things seem unorganized. You can literally chop wood for 30 seconds and buy yourself a 24 hr room, a meal, and have gold leftover. That said, not only do the merchants (or their suppliers) have to beasts to get the oil, they have to trek tot he cold coasts to do it, so a higher price wouldn't be out of line, in my opinion. Also, a common complaint in Skyrim is having too much gold and nothing to spend it on. Sounds good to me. :)
