Adipose
During gameplay, since I've only got one R7 360 for graphic work, whenever various little tells begin to show up that let me know I'm exceeding card capability I usually shut down, open up NMM, and do ruthless triage on active mods. Frex, my latest cut concerned AP and Flower Girls. I'd kept both active for various irrelevant reasons. When I began to have trouble with trainer activiation, a bit of stuttering in character movement, etc. then I dumped AP. That seems to have smoothed play for the time being. I'd like to add another R7 360 but they seem to have been sold out pretty much across the board. Too bad, 'cause they can be crossfired. That would double my vram and should smooth things up considerably. Anyway, whenever I'm having graphics or play problems, I go through and get rid of those mods that are really memory hungry. I ain't happy about that, but it does seem to work. I don't use mods like ATAC at all anymore, even though it's a great mod. Sucks up a ton of VRAM. LeddBate
How often does the issues you describe occur? I've found that hitting F5 (quicksave) followed by F9 (quickload) often clears up problems when I'm approaching memory limits. Example, I'm trekking up a mountainside and I suddenly notice that all the detailed textures on the ground and rocks are starting to disappear. F5 then F9 brings everything back and I can usually (though not always) continue to play without crashing. Also, have you considered a GTX 1070 with 6GB of VRAM? Best bang-for-the-buck GPU out there right now.
Deleted3897072User
You might find Skyrim Performance Monitor useful if you are close to hitting hardware limits. It won't fix anything, but it will tell you what is going on so you know what to fix.
sakora
I actually just did a rebuild of my computer purchasing a AMD A-10 APU with an R7 - Tried to run Skyrim on it... it ran like $!@# so I used my old faithful... its about 6 years old but still does the job! Not sure how many mods your running (im just at over 100) and I've only got 512mb of Vram - running an old Radeon 5670HD - I do run on medium (disabled god rays and FXAA), I have a boat load of retextures. I run an ENB that only does 2 things, and I am fairly FPS Stable at about 20fps If I'm in the mood for scenic screenshots then I typically load a different ENB and high settings. I actually had some major issues using the new Radeon catalyst Crimson, so I've gone back to the old v15 before crimson was released. have you tried using ~ pcb at all? As well I always make sure that there is nothing else running in windows that would hog resources!!! Edited May 16, 2017 by sakora
oak3996
Being late to the game - I just went back to skyrim se and loaded up 185 mods with 181 mods active while playing and crashed to desktop when I tried to reach whiterun which is not too far from riverwood.I'm using radeon 580x (8gig vram), ryzen 1700x with 16gig ram and thought it would be more than enough but looks like it's not. Please tell me it aint so......
LeddBate
I highly doubt you're running into graphics memory issues with 8 GB of VRAM. More likely you're having a mod conflict. Try disabling (not un-installing, just disabling) all your mods except the unofficial patch (which I presume you have) and your DLCs. If your game remains stable, re-enable 10 mods and test again. Keep doing so until you crash in that area again. Now you have it narrowed down to a handful of mods.

QuagaarWarrior
@oak3996 - I agree with leddbate that sounds like a mod conflict to me. Perhaps post your load order? @OP - buying a second graphics card does not increase your VRAM as far as I know. Youâll still be limited to the VRAM on your âprimaryâ card
