is there a way to replace ingame companions/npc's with other companions/npc's?

Like say i wanted to swap paladin danse[companion] with cito [npc], so danse would now look exactly like cito but still remain danse.

i dont understand how i can use this to give a companion a different npc's face, it looks like you can only switch character faces from one save to another.
