[LE] Question on editing nif texture paths (Skyrim)

Recommended Posts

When I change the textures on a nif in nifscope, I'll usually choose from the file manager, which applies the full path "c:\...blah". So if someone is playing Skyrim who has the game installed to another drive, would this impact on the paths or would the game re-jig itself?

Should I be re-editing so the path starts "data\...blah"?

I don't have another PC to test the game on another drive.

Thanks.

You should not use the full path for your nif files as the game engine will search in its data folder for resource but not outside this folder. It might work on your system (settings of your nifskope) but if someone else would use it, this would not work.

The path has only to include anything after data as this is the assumed game folder.

So if your texture is in /skyrim/Data/texture/furniture then writing texture/furniture/texture.dds would be enough and functional.

You can click on the little Cog and it should auto pull you to the texture directory where you can select the texture you are using. NEVER use the full game path. I have had so many errors with armour because I see C:\\ etc on there and my Steam is located somewhere completely different.

Not sure about Skyrim, but for FO4, some of the vanilla textures point to some very odd full paths. Whatever the person was working on when creating it, I assume.
I always use the short path for my custom stuff, but given some of the odd paths they use for the vanilla stuff, it seems to be able to adapt.

Thanks. Seems best to err on the side of caution and re-path them, as much of a pain that is... :)

Had a comment on a mod that the eye/brows were missing in-game, and the pathing seemed to be a potential that might have been causing it and something I'd pondered in the past.
