lack of companion mods and mods in general

Companion mods in Fallout 4 are much more complicated to build than in Skyrim. Skyrim provides a basic template there pretty much anyone can use, even inexperienced mod authors. Fallout 4 is much more complicated and not everyone wants to deal with figuring out how to make it work.

Also, working with a voiced protagonist is very time consuming if you want to write mods that are dialogue heavy (quest, companions, etc). There aren't that many people interested in dealing with that huge headache.

Well I'm certainly glad you are!

Also dialogues are hell compared to Skyrim. And ba2 files while way easier to pack than trying to keep all your scripts in check make it really hard for new people to get into modding.

Also I don't think there is demand? For anything other than new weapons models anyway. Three days ago I've resiled a mod that I've worked on for ages. (It's still a wip but fully functional) making disguises real, with factions reacting and so on. And I got like 607 downloads. It's discouraging.

As a new mod author myself I can attest that creating a companion is an uphill struggle a quest to control their dialog, adding the correct scripts to the actor, scripting to enable them to be a companion, and the list goes on, its challenging work, and the primary reward for all of that effort are downloads and endorsements. Couple that with the fact that many mods go unnoticed by the community, unless its featured on Youtube, which can sap the desire to complete a project. That leaves only the most motivated, or masochistic people to make the groundbreaking mods that extend the life of the game. I released the first alpha of my mod in July of '16 and I just hit 300 unique downloads, so I'm not sure where I stand either motivated or a masochist, the jury's still out on that one.

I probably fall into the second category then, heh. Post it for Xbox. They download like crazy. Like I have seven times as much downloads on Bethesda-Xbox than on Nexus.

so you're that person huh? just wanted to let you know I was heavily interested in that mod, and it led me to checking out your other mods, I can tell you put some time into them and seem to know what you're doing, they're impressive. I'm deep in a playthrough and my pc is a potatoe, so I have been avoiding adding more mods, but that will be the first one I add to my next playthrough.

I was happy to see a mod like that show up, I imagine not everyone scours the nexus like I do, and I'm sure with some time that mod will get some attention. Some of us do appreciate the great work.

here's a question for you guys, what would you say is a good way to begin learning modding with fallout 4? I know in skyrim making a follower was a good starting point, but I have no interest in modding skyrim right now. I already have the CK installed, but have no idea where to start

Thats how I started modding. I would say yes they are good. You learn a lot and have to "reverse engineer" stuff like vanilla companion quests. When you have problem, you also have vanilla companions to look for help.

It takes a lot of time too, I still haven't finished my companion that I started like 6 months ago, lol.

The problem with FO4 compared to Skyrim is the layout of the game itself,it is clearly aimed at FPS and x-boxers with no real inclination to delve into the layers of humanitys struggle with it self..

Adding the voiced protagonist clearly showed there was no will or or desire for lengtyy conversations, thereby blocking modders (except really talented, stubborn and determined ones) from adding to or altering the pathetic storyline and cardboard characters provided in vanilla..The notion that, some of us,had about FO4 continuing the mechanics from Skyrim that catered to Modders and RPG players alike has been proved, extensively,to be but a wet dream.. FO4 was made for and by Console players and FPS junkies.. therefore the ability to mod Characters,NPC´s and others whom you´d expect to have some sort of conversation with.. is severely hampered(by purpose one wonders?)

FO4 has the depths of a puddle and the Storyline of a Disney Tween show.. it´s basically crap and the only reason it still maintains a following is the possibilities given by modders(huzzah!!) to actually roleplay the darn thing..

Left on it´s own, with nothing but the base-game and the horrible DLC´s FO4 would now be in the "Buy 3 get one free" bin at "SuperDuperMart".. it´s not a very good game.. it could have been but it´s not.. it´s a B**** to mod and a pain to play..unless you like shooting everything and to Hades with conversations and plots.. that is why there is an abundance of weapon modsmnot to mention the million-zillion-quatrillion "Bob the Builder" mods..but a less than a handful Companion Mods and woefully few Quest mods.. one could wish for the "Developers" at Bethesda to actually do wath the ir job description says.. "DEVELOP".. but instead they are happy to be eating take-away whilst comparing Controllers in their Mom's basement.. The hope of a Game developed for the PC and not the Boxie-woxies out there dwindles with every new release..
