Buying Steam games.

It's not so bad that they big brother the game while it is running as the fact that the clients do not shut down when you stop playing. I wonder why they need to keep their client running on your PC when you have finished for the day? And it isn't just Steam that does this RGSC, Origin, and all of them that I have seen do this. Who knows what info these clients are reporting back to the overlords. That is also one of the reasons I do not like the way not only games but many pieces of software already have or are going. One of the most insidious pieces of crap I have ever seen is the Adobe updater. Just try to kill that little bastard off. Everytime I think I have got it killed I'll open something in an Adobe program and the next thing I know it is asking if I want to update. That certainly is a pest.

There's no proof of steam scanning browser history like origin does so what are you talking about?

So i just got back into gaming a year or so ago and quickly found out how much it had changed. Now i have to have steam running to play almost all of the games that i like to play and if not steam then its origin or some other crap. Tried at first to buy the hard copy of games so i would not have to use 3rd party programs while i play but i guess that doesn't make a difference either. So if i want to continue to play the new games I have no choice then to put up with this crap and click the unfair contract. It sucks but we don't have a choice.

On another note i tried to buy an old game off steam last night and it would not go through at all so i waited till today and called my bank. "We have had to many fraudulent purchases through this sight so we will not authorize any transactions from them in the future." So what this means is I can't use my check card to buy anything from steam ever again. Well I guess that solved my problem with digital copies pretty fast.

Or, switch who you bank with.

For future reference all EULA are like this. Whenever you buy software you are buying a liscense for said software. The company of origin retains rights to it and if you break the EULA you will either have your rights to the software revoked or your support revoked. This is not news.

Surprisingly no one exept this guy brought this point.

You ALWAYS buy a licence, NEVER own the actual game. If you owned the game, you'd had its source code for example. Since you dont own that, they licene it to you.

I did. I was just being more meta in my terms.

Why do you care what they report? Do you have porn or something?

It's the other way around. People who see their sex lives as their biggest worries are on the straight and narrow path of being good little citizens who abide by their big brother. Really, no one cares if you're frapping to porn.

In my corrupt country of idiocracy and united zombies, if you're not concerned about privacy, then you might not be doing anything "wrong", but you're also not doing anything right.

Just to let people who think they are actually buying games from Steam know what they are actually buying. From Steam's download agreement "... a limited, terminable, non-exclusive license and right to use the Software for your personal use in accordance with this Agreement and the Subscription Terms. The Software is licensed, not sold. Your license confers no title or ownership in the Software."

So in their own words they are telling you that you are NOT buying the game. You are buying a license to use the game. And if they decide to cancel your license for any reason you will not be reimbursed. This is one of the many reasons I make the trip to the store to buy the hard copy. I actually own my game. Do you? Just a little heads up for those who thought they were actually buying a copy of a game that belongs to them when they spend their hard earned money on it. Now maybe that 30 minute trip to the game store doesn't sound so bad huh?

Yes, Steam is a dreadful way to play games. You don't get to own the game you buy, and whenever your game stuffs up it's extremely difficult to find out what's wrong and how to fix it. They just tell you to go and ask in the forums after reading through the long FAQ. They're not user-friendly at all.

I bought a hard disc copy at my local store, but you can't install it without Steam taking control of it. I wish Bethsoft would put out a non-Steam version. Steam make game-playing far more difficult than it was without them.

Would you rather they went back to GFWL?

*shudder*

Steam works, and is pretty much non-invasive, save the odd advert. It's probably the best compromise on the market between DRM and user friendliness.
