Trying to play FO3 with some mods and I can't get load order correct

Greetings Ladies & Gentlemen.

I haven't played FO3 in about 6-7 years. I have been reading guides and asking questions on reddit and elsewhere, and I really thought I was getting things right, but it seems I'm just a dorkapodimus who can't get anything right.

I normally would play FO4, but that's on my desktop, and I can't play on it for the foreseeable future, as I have had surgery, and I cannot sit at the desk, so I am stuck playing FO3 on my laptop. I am using W7 6dbit.

 

I have FO3 GOTY installed through Steam, I have FOSE & NMM installed, all latest versions, and also LOOT.

The game crashes as it starts loading.

I would REALLY appreciate your help, and maybe suggestions for a completely other set of mods. I just don't want to play the vanilla FO3. I want updated graphics, more weapons, bug fixes, probably the stuff you have.

LOOT is the last thing you want to use to sort FO3 mods.

 

Does the game start and run with no mods active?

 

You need to start the game without mods and play through at least until the birthday.

 

If you have the game installed in the default location (Program Files), FOSE is not working, nor will it work as long as the game is in Program Files.

 

You have a lot of inactive plugins, some of which need to be active. For example, CRAFT and CALIBR are both listed a requirements for FWE, yet they are both inactive.

 

Did you do the necessary work to install FWE or did you just click the install button in NMM?

 

You really need to clean-up your load order by removing any inactive plugins. I see you have two Expanded Megaton House plugins active. Do you really need both of them?

How do I go about installing my F03 somewhere else? My STEAM only lets me install in the steam folder, or it says I can create another steam directory on another drive.

There are instructions on Steam on how to move the Steam folder. Log onto Steam and look under the "Tools" tab.

I read the instructions. Moved my games directory. reinstalled FO3. I'm not using any mods. I have tried 3 times now to get through the opening sequence of choosing my name, going through the birthday, and that, and the game keeps freezing. I have never experienced freezing in this opening part before. I don't understand what has changed. I have verified my files, Steam says everything checks out. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

This laptop has no issues running fo3.

Should I uninstall the game and reinstall it a second time today?

The GPU is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M. I keep the drivers updated, the new driver I just downloaded last week.

I have never had an issue with freezing on the opening dialog.... I cannot understand what I'm doing wrong.

You say you haven't played the game in 6-7 years. Have you ever played the game on your laptop?

 

If the game ran on the laptop before you updated the drivers, do you think it might be the new drivers? That has happened to other people when they updated NVIDIA drivers.

 

Does your laptop use two graphics chips?

I played the game on this laptop for more than 2 years. And the freeing happened with the previous driver, as well as the new one.

I don't know if it has 2 computer chips, it just says Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M

Okay Update. I have reinstalled the game for the 4th time in 3 days. And was finally able to get out of the vault. I saved the game, and now hope to begin adding some mods.

 

M48 & MKtavish, do you play FO3 heavily modded? Would you share with me the mods that you are using?
