Oblivion CTD on Startup.

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I just started a fresh install, erased all my saves, and completely deleted the entire Bethesda folder. However, when I finally restarted, it started crashing on startup. Now heres the catch: If I let it startup without the spacebar, then it crashes at the bethesda logo. However, when I do hit the spacebar, It crashes at the loading screen around this point: [__]_________. My guess is this isn't your regular old oblivion problem, but It doesn't happen anywhere else on my computer, so my power of observation ends here. I can, and will, get my specs upon request, however I do know that It did work at one point, so I'm not sure of it's importance. Does anyone know what went wrong, or why this is being caused?

My first guess would be a failed install. Did you reboot after deleting all of your Bethesda files and your saved game folder and before reinstalling? Also, if you did not use the CD to uninstall it might cause some problems. After an uninstall there are some entries left in the registry also, but I haven't seen any problems from them before.

Also, did you install any patches or mods before restarting? I recommend the first start to be with no patches or anything to allow Oblivion to initialize some things.

Assuming you deleted only the savegames, yet the new installation should have overwrited the oblivion.ini at c:\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion....

To be in the sure side copy the Oblivion_Default.ini at the folder you installed the game to the directory of the game on c:\My Documents, delete (or rename) the Oblivion.ini that must be there, rename the default to Oblivion.ini and retry starting the game

You were completely correct. Thank you so very much.

Very good, and bben46 is correct too, those would be the things to try next as the uninstall keep tail entries and files that compromises the reinstall sometimes.
