The update that ran through my Steam yesterday was a Steam software update, not a Skyrim game update. It seems to have updated the advertisements for new games and some of the news articles.

Definately wasn't that. That asks you if you want to restart Steam. This is just showing % completed and download speed next to TESV: Skyrim.

Version info doesn't change... maybe (gasp, dare I hope) it's updates to the CK? Otherwise it's probably updates to better integrate with steam workshop would be my guess... like to know for sure though :P

Steam client updates itself several times a week.

And what steam calls offline mode isn't really offline at all. It still updates itself and downloads stuff.

Here is a way to really make steam offline.

This is asked so often I have made a canned response.

How to use a Firewall to Block Steam auto updates

While Steam does try to keep you connected via internet, they actually do not force you to beyond the activation of the game. But they do not have a legitimate off line setting - they cheat and allow themselves to connect when ever they want to - even if you have set your preference to offline.

Most third party firewall programs, and those suits that have a built in firewall usually have a way to disable or block specific sites such as steam.com from being accessed by your computer or from accessing your computer. When blocked, it appears to Steam that you do not have a live internet connection - But only to that site. Every other internet site (that you allow) will work fine.

Before starting this, Be sure to go online with steam, set your preferences to off line, Then block steam using your firewall. This is easy to undo if a new patch comes out. You will be able to wait until the reviews on the new patch are out before unblocking to allow the patch. Then blocking again after it is installed.

If you don't have a third party firewall, there are many decent free and inexpensive ones available that are as good as or better than the MS firewall that is built into Win7. I am not sure if the MS firewall has this capability or not

Here is a source of quite a few firewalls - some free some are shareware or with a free trial period and some for pay. Be sure to check before you download.

This is a legitimate site that has been around for a long time. And is used by many geeks as a source for software. Think of it as like a Nexus for downloadable software. They also have an excellent section on getting rid of malware.

the wonders of no notes for the user ala steam...

I am looking forward to the day that steam automatically buys games for me too based on its demographics snapshots of my computer and what it is using

But then people would just complain of all the messages, saying stuff like, "I don't need to click okay on every little update or sync. Just automate those things in the background."

Still, your second part was funny. Maybe they will have a subscription service one day, like we do for music and movies. I mean, I don't, but others do.
