Zorlon - Levdia

"Lisette, would you say such things if this bear were a man? as if someone broke thier leg, you help them, but they are of different nature to you and treat it as a threat, would you have the nerve to kill that person, another human being as it were... if not, then why do the same to a creature with offspring to look after?"

Midge asks Lisette

"Hey wait a minute, it's nearing night time, and you expect me to find my way in the dark... how can i remember anything if i dont even hear or see it?.... Who's got that rope again?"

Lisette looks exasperated at Midge. "I am not condoning killing the bear. I was laying out the options. And while some of those option were not pleasant, they are things we should at least consider." she says angrily. She paces around the cave floor in frustration.

"Furthermore, it's an animal not a human. It does not think and reason as a human would. It survives by instinct. And if we heal it and it instinctively feels threatened by us being here in its den with the cubs it will attack. So after feeding it and diminishing our supplies and then healing it, we may have to wind up killing it anyway. I was merely wanted to point out that possibility. Personally, I love it if we could save the bears. But is it really feasible considering what our mission is?"

At this point you can tell that Lisette is furious about the situation. "If you really what to know how I feel about the bear's treatment, I think that we should use the god forsaken traps on the people who set them and leave them to die!" She storms to the front of the cave practically shaking from the anger within her.

"Lisette," Lurel calls to her. "Those thoughts went through my mind too. And we won't kill the bear - whatever it takes. I can use earth magic to separate it from us. I should also be able to stop time for it so we can get near it and the cubs - not for long, but long enough I hope. And as for food - well, there must have been enough here to feed the bear before it became trapped."

He climbs back up to the cave with the firewood he has gathered. If he has found the spoon, he brings it with him to give back to Midge. If not they will have to look for it again in the morning.

"But there is something else about this," Lurel says thoughtfully. "I can't help thinking that we're being tested. Perhaps how we deal with the bear is going to influence the outcome of our mission here. I have stopped believing in coincidences."

He frowns. "And of course, there is the question who set the traps. I doubt that a bear would wander as far back as Konnell's farm when she has cubs to look after. Or that the bear could have made it back here with its legs in that state. No, the traps must have been closer than that. But with none of the Levdians able to come this far - except, you said, for Malika and her friends... and I can't imagine them setting bear traps - who could have set them? Maybe people live here who are immune to the hostile influence. Maybe the people who set the traps are responsible for this influence. Either way, we should find out."

He looks at Lisette. "I don't want to kill the bear. It's suffering offends me - it hurts me to see it like that. We can survive without food if we have to. I'm prepared to give it my share. We can forage for food - or we can go back for extra supplies. What do you say - shall we do our best to save it?"

Ford has been examining the bear. "I'm sure I can fix the legs. It is very weak. even when they are fixed and we feed it it's not going to be capable of breaking through Lurel's wall. Could someone keep an eye on the creature while I relocate the bones. I don't want it swiping me."

He looks at the others. "I don't think we should use all our food but I'm happy to share some."

He pauses. "Shall I do it now while the bear is asleep or in the morning just before we move on?"

Lurel has found the spoon still shiny in the bowl but returning to its rusty state. He returns it to Midge.

"This seems like as good an opportunity as any," Lurel says to Ford. "I should be able to use a spell on it to keep it still at least once - enough to give you time to get away if it wakes up. And maybe I can help it some more after I've slept."

He turns to Midge. "Are you all right, Midge? I thought my heart was going to stop when you jumped off the rock rather than into the cave! At least it looks like you were lucky and didn't encounter anything poisonous out there. Now, do you think you could prepare some food for the cubs while we try to help the mother bear?"

He climbs over the wall to join Ford beside the bear, and looks back at Lisette.

"Lisette, can you have a look at the bear too? You know a bit about first aid, don't you?"

Lisette returns to the others back by the bear. "I'm sorry for ranting before. It's just that when I was younger, this is what the gangs used to do back home - torment someone and injure them - all for "fun" - and then just leave them. Sometimes we couldn't save them and we had to administer a mercy stroke. It just got to me. I'm sorry." You can tell by the way she is speaking that she is remembering something personal.

Going over to the bear, she looks at it. "Putting it into the deepest sleep you can will probably be the best before you try to heal it. Sleep is a natural healing agent. I'd suggest getting it drunk and using that as an anesthesia if it were an option, but I doubt we have enough alcohol to get something that big drunk. (She smiles at that thought) Anyway, once we know it's asleep, we can bind the legs to keep it from thrashing about and then heal it."

Looking around the cave, she continues. " We can make a fire and make up some porridge - a large batch. We can eat and leave the rest for them. We can also portion out some of the dried meats and fruits. The bears will eat anything and the cubs might be drawn here by the smell of the food. However, once we get the bears fed and healed, I'd like to check out this cave and destroy any other traps which might be lying around."

Ford pulls out a large pan from his pack and empties water into it. He sets about making a large tub of porridge.

"While it's doing lets sort out the bear!"

"If you help it sleep, Lurel. I'll fix the bones and wash and clean the wounds. I don't know if a bear will wear bandages but if you can try Lisette, that's the best we can do."

He throws the rope to Midge. "As soon as we've eaten will do as Lisette suggests. Can you keep an eye on the spoon, see if it starts to glow again."

Lurel attempts to cast a spell on the bear which will make it sleep, or at least render it unconscious in some fashion. He sighs, and wishes he could do more.

"How about that salve we bought from Konnell?" Lurel asks. "Maybe we could spare some of the wound salve for the bear?"

He thinks for a moment.

"Another thing we should do is see how far this cave goes. It must have another entrance somewhere - maybe this will be an easier way to get to the sea. And as Lisette said, we need to search for more traps anyway, to make the cave safe for the bears.
