Settlers Not Responding

Does anyone encounter issue with your settlers where they simply do not respond?

I figured the mods I was using was causing conflicts to make settlers stand in 1 place, not do anything, and not respond to a single command I give them but after doing a test run (started a new game with NO mods installed) the same situation eventually cropped up again. All settlers that arrived at settlements (it doesn't matter which, they're all effected) simply stood still, did nothing, and could not be interacted with in any way.

I resorted to a complete purge and re-installing my game after deleting my fallout folder completely. After waiting for a day for it to re-install, I reloaded my non modded playthrough and the settlers started to work again, but only for a little while. After playing further, I did the quest to retake the castle and eventually ronnie turned up afterwards. Now the problem resurfaces. Just as I HAVE to assign someone to an artillery gun and test fire the gun, the settlers resort back to ignoring everything I ask, I click on the settler, assign them to the gun and there is no response.

I'm at the point of ripping my own hair out now, I have no idea, no clue, no answers, just questions. Are there any geniuses out there? Even if I'm just stupid and missing something obvious I'd still love to just know whats going on here with these settlers?

This is actually a common problem. From what I have read (and I am by no means an expert), it relates to how much 'stuff' you have in your various workshops, and if you have supply lines between settlements, it makes the problem appear sooner. How to fix it? I am not really sure..... What you could try is, go into workshop mode, and then wait about ten minutes, see if you can interact with your settlers again. This has something to do with a script that runs when you enter workshop mod, that can take a while to run.... and likes to initiate multiple instances of itself, and you end up with workshop mode unusable for quite some time....... I think Arthmoor has a good explanation for this around here somewhere, but, I don't remember where I saw it.

I have run into this issue less often and it seems to clear itself faster when I have F4SE installed and active but this is anecdotal and not could be an illusion that I am seeing I know it is related to the engine and papyrus but beyond that I don't know what might help. It's possible that the unofficial patch could help also but I don't know how they have edited anything related to the scripts this engine and papyrus are not something I have dug very far into.

Actually, I think the Unofficial patch DOES address this to some point. No idea how effective it is. (I don't really do major settlement building.....)

Thanks for the replies guys, I did find out something new. The unofficial Patch seems to get the settlers assigned (as in the message on the top left of the screen appears saying Settler assigned) but still they just stand there anyway. But hey it's progress at least. I'll try waiting it out in workshop mode for a while to see if anything comes of it, hopes aren't high but I'm at the point of throwing spanners at the works now.
