Unstable oblivion

Recommended Posts

Hi All

After installing the shivering isles, all the booster packs and the relevant patches, I am getting very frequent lock-ups.

It mostly happens when entering stores, but sometimes i can't even get past the first fight in the tutorial.

Also, when trying to load a saved game, I get an instant CTD without even seing the list of save games.

I tried installing the unofficial patches, and their fixes, but the problem persists. The unofficial patches asks me to enable something in the console, but I can't even get it to appear let alone enable it.

I have updated every piece of hardware on my computer with the latest drivers (at least I think I have), but I am attaching dxdiag just in case.

I hope some of you can help me

regards

PB

Have you tried Cleaning off your old drivers first? I don't know if thats part of the problem, but it can't be helping things any.

Since you have already a former installation is very possible it left configurations files that are the reasons of the actual problems. the first thing I suggest you try is coping the file Obilivion_Defaults.ini from your installation directory to the C:\My Documents...\Oblivion one and renaming it to Oblivion.ini (after backuping and deleting the one already there). return if not enough.

About the console it is open pressing the ~ key, but as your keyboard seems to be danish the key that counts is the one most left above the TAB key.

Doing what nosisab said will probably help. But there are a few things you need to know about oblivion. If you have alot of mods, the game will crash, frequntly, if you have your mods scattered around. Like for example say you have 20 armor mods, a few quest mods, some cosmetic mods, and so forth. If you have say 5 armor mods, a cosmetic mod the n 5 armor mods again, it kinda makes the game go wack from reading different areas then having to go back. I had this problem alot.

I put my cosmetic mods first, armor mods inthe middle and stuff that needed to be last, of course last. It may sound crazy but i only CTD maybe 1/50 times i play.

I have roughly 250 mods running at the same time. they all work with no conflicts ( in game anyway.)

If you have obmm run a conflict report. if you dont have obmm. You probably could use it.

Obmm=Oblivion mod manager.

Also if you got patience and some time another very helpful tool is wrye bash. Advice for wyre bash is PLEASE read everything, as it can totally mess everything up. Unless you do something really wrong it wont hurt your computer though. Make sure you back up everything before you mess with it. I didnt when i started using it and ummm boy did i mess stuff up!

By the way: I reinstalled oblivion in the default location, and actually got past the entire tutorial. But the minute I tried entering a cave, the game froze.

maybe the sound is to blame? Because I read something about the game crashing when it had to change sound track or something

Which version of Oblivion are you running? The GOTY (Game of the Year) version has a bug that you need the patch to fix. The D2D version is a nightmare for modders. Any cracked version usually has problems.

Which patch (s) do you have installed?

Is your sound built into your motherboard? if not, what is your card?

What Video board & video ram?

How much RAM on motherboard?

Have you tried killing off your background processes? especially your web browser, anti virus, Anti spy ware, and especially the Hewlett Packard Printer drivers? Anything that tries to access the internet in the background while you are playing can cause Oblivion to crash.

I tracked one crash problem to a computer utility that defragged the hard drive in the background when it thought you weren't doing much. It would try to start, then Oblivion would freeze. Sometimes it would come back and sometimes not.

The crashing on changing sound tracks is usually due to either low memory or an old sound driver.

I bought the game when it first hit the shelves, and it's not the GOTY version. Other than that I have the "knights of the nine" plugin package, and the shivering isles expansion.

When I installed the game, I also patched it to 1.2.416 (or whatever it is called, the newest one) and installed the community patch for oblivion

After that I installed shivering isles, patched it, and used the community patch for shivering isles

I believe all the hardware is written in my dxdiag file in OP, so you can see what you need to, there.

but for your convenience, I will list them here

motherboard: AliveNF7G-HDready w/ nvidia GeForce 7050 PV and nforce 630a (newest drivers)

Geforce 8800 GTS 320 megs (newest drivers)

2 gigs of RAM

but my soundcard is integrated into the motherboard. It's called: Realtek HD Audio (newest drivers)

It seems I can enter ayleid ruins, but I crash every time I enter sideways cave. I will experiment a little further, to see if all ayleid ruins works, and if all caves crashes

Sorry about that, I read the dxdiag when you first posted & forgot about it. All of your Hardware except the integrated sound look good to me. Usually the integrated sound works OK most of the time too, but on mine I noticed a definite increase in performance when I went to a new sound card.

If it doesn't crash anywhere except Sideways cave that is a real mystery. M y first time through Oblivion, I got a crash (CTD) every time I tried to follow an NPC on one of the Glarther quests in Skingrad. It crashed in exactly the same place, right outside of the vineyard. After rebooting and trying everything else, I went out of Skingrad by the other gate and circled around to approach the place from the opposite direction, it worked and never crashed there again. It's kind of hard to find another way into Sideways cave though. Try doing something else and completing another quest before attempting Sideways again. Be sure to save often. At its best Oblivion is not a stable game.
