Better Player Character Interaction

It really bothers me that the player character in Skyrim doesn't show even the slightest sign of being alive, asides from regular breathing and minor idle animation, the character just stands and stares into nothingness, regardless of the situation or the environment. The most I've seen was my Khajit character sometimes frowning in mid battle and the expression sometimes gets "stuck" on her, but asides from that I haven't seen my Breton female even do that. Killshots, pain, people talking... The character's face remains completely blank and keeps staring into the void.

This issue really started to vex me after a while, specially since followers and NPC in general follow you with their gaze, why isn't the player character doing the same? I remember the player character in Oblivion used to do that, why such a step down in Skyrim? It feels as if Bethesda was in such a rush to release the game they forgot to add this (important!) feature (among many other things). Something as "small" as following other people with your gaze can make a huge difference to how your character feels.

I really wish I had more knowledge to dig around and find out how this is working myself, but I really don't even know where to start. Hopefully someone in the modder community has the knowledge and willingness to change this.

I agree totally it's like this:

Irileth: There's a dragon attacking Whiterun!

Guards: Gasp! Were so dead! ect.

Dragonborn: ಠ_ಠ

Irileth: Yes you heard right! A dragon!

Dragonborn: ಠ_ಠ

Irileth: [charismatic speech about killing the first dragon seen since the last age]

Dragonborn: ಠ_ಠ

Whole time fighting the dragon ಠ_ಠ

Kill dragon consume it's soul Guard says "Your Dragonborn!"

Dragonborn: ಠ_ಠ

et cetera.

+1

This actually bothers me a lot, especially since I remember that in Oblivion my character would turn her head and look at any townsfolk who were passing her by and looking at her, maybe saying something as the go about their business. Such a small thing it seemed, but it really did bring things to life a lot.

Would be awesome if someone found a way to do this! I'm not much of a modder myself but it doesn't seem like there would be a lot of rewiring considering all the NPCs can already do it...

That's exactly what I was thinking, this shouldn't be too difficult since NPC characters can do it too. It's pretty sad really, when I take screenshots next to one of my followers, my character feel as if she doesn't belong, while the followers appear pretty lifelike, my char is more like poorly made android. :(

  • 2 weeks later...

Someone with more motivation than me could try the following.

The Actor script I think it is, has a function "enableHeadtracking()" or something like that. You could play with applying it to the players actor. most everything else works when applied to the player actor.

If you look in the first 50 or so quest stages in, MQ101 I think it is, it's used a lot for the cart driving guards in the opening sequence.

Shouldn't be hard to at least prove it works.
