Exactly. I note that on the site it states the following:

"Keep all your files in your own personal mod library. Customize mods by changing their name, icon and description. All your files and settings are backed up to the cloud so you can access them on any computer whenever you want"

So this allow users to change mod names etc, it potentially opens up the floodgates for users to simply rename a mod and pretend they made it, then share it. On top of that, they're also storing mods on their cloud.

Way to go to stick the middle finger up to mod authors who actually want to control how and where their work is distributed.

time to find a counter to make mods incompatible with their manager it seems.

I mean, once you put it out there on the internet, it's there for good. you can take it off the nexus if you want but people will still be able to share the files. there's even reddit threads for sharing mods that got taken down.

That doesn't make that subreddit, or what ModDrop is doing, lawful or ethical. Edited by Reneer

That looks absolutely not trustworthy. Could be just me, though, I'm allergic to buzzwords like "app" or "cloud".

But anyway, that looks like something meant to impress stupid people and/or investors.

Renaming mods probably doesn't mean what you think, though, it's probably just local renaming. What I think is more of an issue is the "revenue for modders" bullet point. Sounds like you can get paid for stealing mods.

I assume they plan to make their money either by selling paid mods, or by being spyware/adware. If not right away, then they are planning to sell their "app" to something like microsoft or facebook once enough people have installed it.

Likewise. Whenever "the cloud" comes up in conversation, I suggest replacing "the cloud" with "someone else's computer." That tends to put what the "cloud" actually is into perspective.

The thread in the GMAD forum has yielded a lot of info regarding the developers dodgy history; their actions so far regarding this new site, as well as the lead developer distorting the truth regarding certain things (and their utter inability to perceive beforehand the issues that mod authors will have with their service) don't convince me that they have honorable intentions - with the only exception to this being the individual who's from the Torchlight modding community who's somehow got himself involved with these charlatans; he seemed reasonable and appeared to understand the concerns that Terrorfox raised, although he's not a dev.
