New Vegas Large Quest Idea

Hello, I am Mouse. I have never actually made a mod, but I have a huge respect for the longevity they give games that otherwise would sadly have faded into obscurity.

I am more of a writer. As I have stated I have never made a mod. I have. played several though. Right now I believe I have around 85 mods active in FNV.

Lately, I have been Inspired by the projects that have added DLC and larger sized quest lines to Bethesda games; Project Brazil especially.

I have a rather ambitious story in mind that I think of New Vegas: Inside Straight. I know for sure I want this story to happen before the main story. I want the player character to go through the vanilla game opening after FNVIS closes with them having decided to put the events that have transpired behind to pursue a life on the surface in the Mojave Wastes. That is pretty bare bones I know, but I want to keep it close at least on the public thread.

I am still working on the narrative, but I am dying to share with anyone interested in helping me make it happen.

Details I can share here:

It is going to be a two "main quest" arc.

One path is a "who done it" with ties to the player

The other piece is a power struggle between two "factions"

The entire story takes place in Vault 5

The narrative is a race against the clock with the vault set automatically open in a short time

Ideally, the player will be able to use the same saved game like in TTW so your FNVIS and FNV character is the same.

Vault 5 should be a location to visit later in life.

Items gathered from FNVIS will be in safe in Benny's room at the tops with a key obtainable via Ring-A-Ding-Ding completion.

I have a lot in mind and just want to talk about it. Message me for more specifics if you like. Otherwise, what do people, especially those with practical know how think?

The reality of it is that there's no shortage of ideas. A lot of people play the game and something within the game makes them think "wouldn't it be cool if...". A lot of people think that these ideas have value, like the only thing the mod community needs is the next big idea. That's not the way it works. People who know how to make mods have their own ideas. There's no shortage of ideas.

What we have a shortage of is people who can turn ideas into actual working mods. It's not easy, especially when our main toolset is the GECK, which is buggy, clunky, un-intuitive, and difficult to use in many ways.

Sadly, there are a lot of posts that begin with something along the lines of "hey, I have this great idea, I just need a team to implement it for me." Those posts never go anywhere. Even if you have a talented team being led by someone with both technical knowledge and ambition, getting people to work together as a team for a large-scale project is difficult, and most of those projects fail as well. They go into it with great ideas, then they find out how much work it is to actually implement those ideas using the GECK, and many give up and lose interest. The team falls apart, and it's yet another dead mod with a few interesting posts about it here on the nexus. Successful projects like Project Brazil are few and far between. Most team mods end up with only a tiny fraction of the mod being done and nothing ever gets released.

The FNV modding community has also shrunk quite a bit since FO4's release. Many talented modders are spending their time on the newer game. With fewer FNV modders out there, getting a team together is even more difficult.

My advice to you is that if you really want this to become an actual mod, you need to dig into the GECK and learn how to make it yourself. There are a lot of people here who can help you, but while we have time to give pointers here and there, we don't have anywhere near the time to do the actual work for the mod. Scale back your ideas to something that you can actually achieve by yourself. Don't try to make the next Project Brazil.
