Blocking and getting hurt?

Hello,

Something doesn't make sense to me. Why should a blocked attack with a sword hurt your health. The sword blocks and takes the blunt of the hit. I can see it affecting stamina! But, health seems a bit strange. I can understand if the blow hits the body.

thanks,

todd

Here are my guesses.

Since there are no low strikes/high strikes (and relevant blocks) you could just stand there and block and not die.

Unless power attacked I guess.

It could also be that not getting hurt at all when blocking would make the block skill useless. Damage received when blocking goes down as block is leveled until the cap (which I think is %80 reduction)

I know there are many games where blocking renders you almost invulnerable, this just isn't one of those games. Think of it like you're blocking the main blow but they graze your shoulder or leg or something if that helps you cope.

Perhaps a better system would be as you said, blocking makes you lose stamina and once that's gone you lose health, and the perks affected how much stamina as well as health will be lost when blocking.

Ive Never seen a Blocking Blow that looses your Health, i mean i can take a Sledge Hammer and hit the Shield with the guy holding it witch will make his Arm blue with pain and maybe break a Bone, but it has Nothing to do with your Health that will eventually in 30 minutes later still Not kill the guy, but he will be dead tired and in Serious Pain.

Which would make the "loose your stamina first then health" the way to go. I mean eventually your arm will be bruised/broken to the point that you just cannot block anymore.

Though I would think a broken bone would equate to some sort of health loss, but that's beside the point.

If you successfully block a portion of the damage still gets through depending on your block skill. A high block skill would mean less damage penetrates. Note that your skills are limited to (I think) 85% so a high skill will still see some damage get through. Blocking with a weapon is less efficient than blocking with a shield so more damage is taken by the target. In the game my character has defeated opponents who have successfully blocked each blow. That is how the game works it.

This is something I think Duel - Combat Realism addresses. I have also addressed it in my combat tweaks mods. Basically, what I have done is this:

-Blocking at max skill level will now block all damage

-Blocking with weapon at max skill level blocks 95% of damage

-Blocking blows requires more stamina

-Attacking (even regular attacks) now use stamina

To compensate for the manner in which you can now survive by blocking continuously, I also:

-Made NPC's bash A LOT more often when the player/their adversary is blocking

-Made NPC's bash much more often when they are power attacked

-Made them block more often when attacked

-Increased odds of power attacks against blocking foes

Sure you can block all the damage now. But NPC's will try like mad to bash their way through your blocks now, as opposed to vanilla where they rarely tried at all.

Additionally, I:

-Narrowed the 35 degree hit cone to only about 10 degrees

-Slightly increased stamina regen to compensate for all combat moves requiring more stamina

-Decreased weapon reach from 141 to 120 (not counting weapon size modifiers on weapons themselves, of course)

-Decreased bash reach to 80 units (hand to hand is only 64) down from 141

-Increased stagger chance on unblocked hits

This makes combat a close quarters affair and gives 2H weapons a slight reach advantage. It also means you must close to bash, instead of magically performing a bash from Claymore/Warhammer reach.

**All of these are in the esp file I released that tweaks the combat game settings.**

I also overhauled the combat perks as well, for those interested. There are 2 esp files, if you want to check them out. You can use the one described above, by itself, for a far more challenging experience. Or use only the new Perks, for a far more powerful player. Use both and you get more impact, more strategy and much more fulfilling combat, in my opinion.
