Skyrim Freezing Randomly

SKSE is NOT the reason scripts make problems with save games. The SKSE team is trying to develop a workaround for the issue of script not being removed properly from saves. Until then, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS on updating any mods that are scripted (usually a clean save is required).

There are other reasons for a total freeze up during the save game loading: Cell has more in it than what your Vram/Ram can allow, for example. Installing or making and loading up mods that make edits to what an NPC in player's service (aka follower/companion) has equipped/inventoried. Even DEP can freeze you up, trying to dump while windows is trying to ask if its okay that Skyrim makes a dump.

It's my belief that most of the posters in this thread have mods installed creating the issue. "Enhanced Blood Textures" is scripted, and uses bloat causing method of keeping blood around.

Actually I did exactly how the modders said, because I knew from the Oblivion-times what simple things could mess your game up, and furthermore I have 16gb ram. I know the game can't really make use of that (kind of a miss-buy) but it would be nice :(

I think the bitter fact is that one should narrow one's choice of mods to the most important. too bad that there are sooo many good ones of them :) (and no I don't even care about those 1000+ mods how-to-make-yourself-a-rpg-pimp which are out there. )

It would be awesome if someone reliable would make a list of mods which to avoid.

It's in the Skyrim.ini (not Skyrimprefs, just the Skyrim.ini).

It's near the top, and specifically it's "ugridstoload=5" without the quotation marks. It starts out by default at 5, which is very stable. I only got crashes after I raised mine to 7, though I guess for some people it remains stable up to 9. Each increment increases the distance at which you see detailed terrain, greatly increasing immersion but sadly causing crashes and freezing for many people. It must be increased or decreased to odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc).

If yours is at 5 and you're still freezing or crashing, I wouldn't bother to put it at 3. It's probably not the problem. If you don't crash and you'd like to try raising it, be aware that if you save on a high ugrids value and then try to load that save on a lower ugrids value, your game will crash. Don't save until you know if a high ugrids is going to crash, or you'll mess up your save game and have to do a bunch of complex stuff to restore it.

I'm using ugridstoload=7 and I had random freezes , now I'm using a mod called safety load at http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/46465/? and no more random freezing !

I was having this problem. My problem was due to stuttering and background load. I am using multithreading settings, and the background load was creating a lot of script lag. Sounds would not play properly. I disabled background texture and model loading and increased ugridstoload to 35 (a really, really high number) and the stutter stopped, and more importantly the script lag and freezing. Most of my freezing was due to loose unqueued 4K textures.

I had horrible problems too with Skyrim. I discovered the problem by the process of elimination. Disabled all mods that seemed to be likely troublemakers, and re-enabled them one by one till I found the problem. A mod that changed the Map was the culprit. Other than that, ensure that you have the latest Patch and latest SKSE (if you use mods that use it). And of course, using too many mods at one will also cause problems I think.

I could kiss you, was having an issue with whiterun and couldn't figure out what was causing it... I never in my wildest dreams would have considered the world map was causing freezing in whiterun specifically, makes 0 sense to me... ah well, ty for solving this 4 years ago xd <3

The problem could stem from having two mods that concern the same files (for example, those concerning crafting.) When two mods are conflicting over one file and the game calls for that file, it gets "confused" and freezes. It could have to do with textures, meshes, combat, you name it, but I suspect that this could be a culprit. Try seeing if there are similarities on when your game crashes, say, it always happens when crafting. check your load order for mods related to crafting, and disable all but one or all of them. This worked for me when I disabled the Complete Crafting Overhaul.

Windows Vista anyone, anyone, anyone...

Windows Seven anyone, anyone, anyone...

Win7 = Vista + Huge Patch

Something like that.

Folder permissions & Steam library folder set to read only? (after having modded it about 100 esp/esm or so) The game's timescale can cause some super wonky stuff. Then threading this across multicores in the old engine would freeze. Game start up, if it's clean & set all right one at a time MCM like with a lot of testing. Yeah, you could run into freezing in 2018 & this search is top of the list on the net for the issue. This post lacked a diagnostic tree with a end result. I'm sure someone knows why Oldrim freezes, but until then it's a process of elimination one at a time. It gets desperate we'll even be running some compatibility mode for vista SP's & actually it might have a admin flag on it, might want to remove that while I'm testing it for freezing due to folder permissions & read only status. Which figures, that it would be a windows problem that caused Oldrim to be a little problematic. It's still Creation Engine though, pretty nice engine, just sayin. I'll let you know if I find anything else.
