Mechwarrior Online Teaser

I cannot happy-dance enough to show my joy at seeing this actually turning into more than just vaporware. And a 3049 game date means beginning of the Clan invasion, though it does leave unanswered whether that means players will be allowed to play Clan factions, or only Inner Sphere to start.

the Atlas prime is freakin awesome!

Prime? Ah, the newer generations, not knowing an AS7-D when they see it, and using the generic Clan naming scheme...

Nope, it will probably have the 20 or so pre-defined iconic mech designs (10 for each faction), a linear BF style advancement system, and have instanced environments similar to TF2.

Oh, and expect the first 20 hours of play to be spent in a Locust.

Good news is that it's also F2P... so expect there to be a well established "Pay to Win" dynamic.

just read the game forums

there's no way to have a SP game, only if they if they follow the Jihad or Dark Age Era

This this is a Reboot, it's the good and Ol' Clan Invasion: We had the refusal war, The Ghost Bear/Crusader Wolf Incident, The predating years before the clan invasion(mercenaries), Then we had the Operation Bulldog and Serpent(Mechwarrior 3 and MechCommander), and then we had the Fed-Com Civil War from Mechwarrior 4

@Vagrant0

No, no Locust. The whole lawsuit mess over the images licensed (yet not licensed, complicated story) from Harmony Gold never did get sorted out properly, and they raised a stink over the first 3015 trailer because of the Warhammer in it. More likely the initial mech options will be Mercury, Thorn, Commando and Mongoose standard-tech models.

If they started with anything less than a full Technical Readout worth of mech choices, especially with the sub-factions (5 major houses and several smaller ones, 4 initial clans) within each meta-faction (Inner Sphere vs Clans), they will have far more complaints than their forums can handle. Considering once they have the engine up and running, each new mech added just requires some art assets and maybe some altered animations, as all the weapon mechanics will already be in place and reconfigurable, it should not take too much to see a decent variety of machines on the battlefield. They cannot afford to have strictly single-variant models, either, as nearly the entire frontline of the Clan army is Omnimechs, which means a wide variety of weapon configurations on each chassis - even with the very basics off TRO:3050, you are looking at 3-5 variants per Clan chassis.

Also, the developers have discussed the F2P they plan to use, and it boils down to the "Pay to Win" isn't really that much of a guaranteed victory, as each mech is intended to fill different roles - and allegedly buying earlier access to Heavy/Assault machines just means you will be the guy with the giant bullseye on your forehead, as your opponents will either be performing roles you have little way of stopping (high speed recon missions, objective raids, etc), or be unable to keep up with your allies during battle and potentially get separated and ganged up on. By its very nature, the game mechanics would allow any F2P player to reach the same level as the players who fork out cash early on, it will just take them longer. They did state they will not deny access to mechs just because someone is a F2P player, they just have to work a bit harder to get up in the ranks of higher tonnage machines... of course some players may prefer lower weight classes, and choose intentionally to stay in those mechs, as the roles will be very different the bigger your mech gets. Even the Lyrans learned you can't totally rely on assault mechs exclusively to win every battle.

Not saying it will absolutely end up that way, but the developers do recognize the problems involved with a "Pay to Win" store model.

Yeah, finally got the time to read through all the dev blogs and Q&A and such. Still, 6 factions plus mercenaries to start gives a decent variety of choices. And technically, with a 3048-49 start, the Clans should appear over the following year from launch (or if beta takes a long time, around launch maybe?) - 3050 was canonically when the Clans started taking actual Inner Sphere worlds, not just Periphery planets. I also got a kick out of the 1:1 day ratio the one dev blog mentioned, allowing them to keep events content flowing so major historical battles and such can still occur while allowing players to keep on playing around them (or in them, should they get that kind of mechanic figured out without breaking canon victories/losses).

Just need to get a hold of my regular Battletech players now, they will be just as excited as I was and we will likely end up forming a unit for either a public beta or for game launch.

Edit: also read 7 mech chassis have been confirmed, with 12 expected by launch, and several variants of each, as well as some customization allowed.
