Random CTD's (and a few other issues) after a complete reinstall of everything

Alrighty..... After coming back to Fallout 4 after about two months away my game was CTD on startup so I did what I always do and updated everything I could (Mods, NMM, Loot, FO4Edit, Bodyslide, ect.). After this everything would start I'd get in game, make a new character, play for about an hour and then CTD (instant, no error logs, no freeze before CTD nothing). So I clean everything up and start adding mods back one at a time. Everything seams peachy but suddenly Unique NPC's is causing children to be missing faces, hair, and clothing/body textures, and some adult bodies are missing (I've tried the mirror downloads and the same things are still missing and the same skins/outfits that worked before still work so I think its a load order issue that I'm having trouble pinning down). Seeing as how that doesn't affect gameplay TOO much I decided to let that slide and continue adding mods until I was back up to everything installed and "working". After everything was installed and working, and after spending over 24 hours on my save, I realized I haven't even looked at my character or clothing so I go make some outfits. At this point I notice that I have three random clothing items with a stack size of "0" in my inventory and picking up duplicates of that outfit doesn't add "1" to the stack so I can remove them (fixed this by removing everything else from my inventory and then using the console to add "1" of the item ID's to my inventory which fixes the null stack and lets me remove them from my inventory). Not a game breaking bug but might be a symptom of the last issue. Now whenever my cursor even floats over a legendary clothing item in any menu (pip boy, clothing bench, quick and full loot box) my game CTDs without a log. Anyways currently back to Loot's auto sort because when I tried reordering things the way I thought they should go (and roughly where they where pre my update + new mods) it wouldn't even start. Loot is not giving me odd errors and FO4Edit is showing no conflicts ether, and fallout has not created any crash logs in months (my last crashlog was from May 20th... Normaly I wouldn't ask but I've spent more than 10 hours trying to get everything to play nice and I cant figure it out.

TLDR: My game keeps CTD and I think its a load order issue but I'm having trouble pinning it down.

TLDR:PS: I'd also like help figuring out why Unique NPC's is freaking out when it was working fine up until this point.

Are you asking why you are getting CTD's when you have in that list 167 mods?

Do you think that a computer with the best video card would not be overstressed with such amount of mods ? Not even with my Nvidia 1070 8gb of video RAM and 16b RAM ( SSD drive and i7-6700 ) would be able to run this game with such amount of mods my friend !! It would be overstressed and most likely, I will get CTD's as well.

Did you verify your fallout 4 files in Steam/fallout 4/properties/local files ? This will help if you have not done it but again, too many mods and you are not saying what type of rig you have. Did you install mods one by one and see which one is the cause of your CTD's ? This is the only safe way to find out.

Also, did you read the mod description and followed the author's recommendation about compatibility and load order? Regardless of what LOOT may suggest, the author's recommendation is what we need to apply in any load order.

There are a lot of mods that IMO, are not necessary at all but that is your game not mine. For your information, I only have 83 mods and my rig is very decent and very capable ... BUT ... I would never over load it especially with some mods that are not really necessary. For example, and is not necessary related to your list : why should I install a mod to weight less when I can increase my carry weight via console command to whatever amount I want ? Why should I install a mod ( for example ) that allow me have a chest full of miscellaneous or crafting items when I can get thousands of it via console command ?

I am sorry but I think that you need to nuke everything and reinstall again and start from scratch and install one by one and see which one is causing your CTD. Also, probably you need to be more selective in what mods to install and which ones you can spare from that list and give priority to those that you really need to play your game.

The first time I played FO4 with mods ( less than a year ago ), I made the same mistake that you are doing. I started to install all mods and finished having 125 and my game was very unstable. I decided to give priority to only those that I really need to play my game in the way that I wanted to play it. I went nuke and now I only have 83 and my game is stable ( 60 fps ) 98% of the time. Because I do have WOTC ( War of the commonwealth ) and this mod is number one for me, and because I have WOTC setup above the default settings, I am getting once in a while, a CTD, otherwise, I don't ... but ... for your information I do not have any texture/graphic mod because they do apply globally and they stress any video card out there and even though I do not have any of those, my game looks very sharp because I modify my video card options in the game menu to get what I want.

You do not have to do exactly as I did but I was there before as you are now and after making up my mind, I was able to eliminate a lot of mods and give priority to those I really need.

I am going to start a new game as soon as the new WOTC mod is out; I will go nuke, wipe out everything and reinstall the whole thing again ( it is a pain but a necessary step if I want to avoid problems ) and I can assure you that I will eliminate about 10 mods form the list that I have now. I do not want to deactivate those mods now because anytime that you do that mid game, it will create a real problem to your game, so I better wait a little longer and when that new mod is ready, I will restart a new game from scratch. My new list will be filtered to the point that I will only have exactly what I need.

A : Yes , the game can still run "smoothly" with 167 mods

B : I doubt that list of esps makes up 167 mods.

Anyway , I'm running 150 mods atm and I rarely get ctd , about once after 4hours of constant playing.

I can't tell which mod is causing the ctd but if it's a mod conflict u could try finding it out by yourself while fixing your load order , here's what I usually do :

- Run a new game with no mods installed

- play until I pick up the pip boy (before I enter the elevator)

- Do a solid save then exit to deskton

(If playing on survival mode , exit , enable fallout 4 unofficial patch then enable survival quick save , log in again , save the game , then exit to desktop)

- enable fallout 4 unofficial patch

- enable all mods that overhaul the visuals/sound effects

- run the game again , if It runs nicely , do another solid save and exit to desktop again

- enable all retexture related mods , eg: Optimized vanilla textures/ companion overhauls/synth overhauls/raider overhauls etc..

- run the game again , if it runs nicely do another solid save and exit to desktop again , if it doesn't , exit without saving and uninstall all of ur recently installed mods , then install them 1 by 1 (install a mod/open game/install a mod/opengame etc..)

This is a personal preference but I like to organize my mods this way :

1) unofficial patch

2) sound overhauls

3) visual overhauls

4) Hud overhauls

4) weapon and armor overhauls

5) AI/combat overhauls (such as deadlier deathclaws or Customize Legendary enemy spawning)

6) custom items/npcs (such as new clothes mods)

7) settlement related mods

@ MrPandaz .... you are getting a CTD every 4 hours of constant playing and I am getting probably one every 25 hours playing and I am very sure it is because my WOTC is above the default settings ... if I run WOTC on "mama's boy", I will probably never get a CTD.

the game can run with 200 mods but any video card will be over stressed, so my point is that it is nice to have mods ( I am not against them ) but at the same time to have those only necessary for your specific game style so you can have a good balance, have the game to run smoothly and avoid constant CTD's ... ultimately what every player is looking when playing a game, is to have a smooth performance on the top of everything and get 60 fps if it is possible, otherwise, instead having an entertainment, we will have a headache.

I do agree 100% with your organization so I do follow the same pattern as well. The OP load order is not right and I also do not know which mods are causing the CTD's. A good starting point is to download those mods from the "most downloaded mod list" in NMM, those that have been endorsed by thousand of players so those mods are safe if you follow not just LOOT but on the top of that, the author's recommendation related to compatibility and load order.

1. 167 mods is quite low for me actually. I had the game running at a stable 40fps on my last playthrough and I had over 250 mods (although I was using a few bashes at the time and I'm not with this load order)

2. I'm running an Nvidia 780ti, with 16gb of RAM and a 6core AMD FX-6300 overclocked to 3.8GHz

3. I've verified the base files, I've done a 1 at a time reinstall starting with unoffical patches, then graphics and sound, clothing/weapons, NPC edits, settlement objects, and lastly misc stuff.

4. I worked out that it was ether a conflict with unique npc's and something else, or a conflict with Snappybuilds and Modular Kitchen.

5. I've disabled Snappybuilds, Modular Kitchen, and the Curtains mod (because I got them to work together), and for some reason the CTD I was getting from looking at legendary no longer happens. Also the odd issue I was having with Unique NPC's where bodys where missing and children had no faces has 99% resolved itself. I have no freaking clue why disabling these mods would cause these issues sence none of them have anything to do with the issues I was having, and the conflict I was getting with SnappyBuilds and Modular Kitchen also shouldn't have exsisted but who knows.

6. I'm currently running 189 Mods with no issues except for an occasional frame drop when I get foggy weather or i'm in a super over developed settlement (my current Castle build is likely close to 20x the vanilla build limit and I'm still getting 38fps thanks to texture optimization ;O)

  • 8 months later...

I'm running a similar system, with over 200 mods plus enb on ultra settings. I expect crashes every so often, but I have run with nary a crash. I've also noted that mods are acting wonky when previously they haven't.
