Hey I have no idea about how to make mods and I’m not going to pretend to but I have an idea. My basic idea is to allow people to find out about new mods while playing Oblivion TES IV. Is it possible for all the posters you see around the place (i.e. the WANTED posters of the Gray Fox) to be updated when you connect to the net so that news (by news I mean up and coming mods and so on) about oblivion can be shown in game. Is this possible if it is I don’t think I can help in any way as I have zero experience in moding.

If any thing happens keep me informed I'll probably forget to check on this so if you want to tell me its imposable and I shouldn't have asked msg me at [email protected]

I don't know of anything like this! Sorry! :(

I suppose you could download an "advertisement mod," well, advertising a mod! :P

Cheers,

No, Something like this would require external software to lift images from a file server periodically which would be used in game by a number of meshes. For obvious reasons, that probably isn't a good idea from a security standpoint. Who ever made it would also need to create a simple application to detect where Oblivion is installed, so that those files would always be going to the right place.

The other option would be to have a single mod that would be updated, and have people manually download and install the related files. While less of a security risk, is not without complications. Whoever was managing and creating these images may be biased for or against some projects, and they would probably have trouble keeping track of what it released when. And regardless the method that you aquire these files, it would probably be less useful than just checking up on mod projects you're interested in to see how they are going, and browsing sites like this one. Large mods usually take a long time, small mods usually don't have any sort of pre-release teaser. And many mods wouldn't really make sense to have their contents advertised like that.

That's not to say that someone couldn't make posters to place in game advertising say clothing stores like Apachii or Hiyoko, Cheydinhal Pet Store or Midas Emporium etc..

There could be ones for various house mods around the province and even just product ads for items like Real Swords, Decorator assisstant or Ren's Beauty Pack, "Because You're Worth It".

It would be better if you used those mods but not essential.

The real problem has more to do with the creation and implementation of those posters. Quality adverts would take time to make, and most people who have made those kinds of mods probably don't have the time to spend putting something like that together. The implementation is the other part of it, any mod like this would have to be constantly updated and as mentioned (I think), few people are unbiased enough to be trusted with managing such a project. There is also the matter of people finding and downloading such a mod when the mods being advertized are actually easier to find. Afterall, a mod like this would only make sense if newer people could locate it, download it, install it, without any effort, and be able to find the featured mods easily.

The only technical part of this which doesn't work too well is that whole part about obtaining new textures without people having to manually download every time. Although I think it's possible to link to .dds files located outside the Oblivion directory, the problem is having a directory somewhere that can be safely updated like that. Most browsers are set to clear their cache when the browser closes, and anything else would probably need to make use of a seperate application.

Yeah, I was more suggesting (not too clearly now that I read it back) moving away from a topical, updated 'bulletin" type thing which I appreciate the difficulty of, to a simpler mod (albeit still a lot of work) where a single author might with permission make some art for a few established favourites a la tribute. No outside links, with the need to update minimal if at all. But I appreciate what you're saying. I do just really like the idea of mods finding their way into the in-game culture in some form. Anyway I'm nudging a hijack here so I think I'll put my brain back in it's box now.
