Voice lines not working anymore for some reason?

There are a number of guides to running CHKDSK on the web. This page lists 5 different ways, but the third (from Windows Explorer) is the easiest for most people.

It is not a good idea to update graphics drivers in the middle of any game unless necessary to fix a problem. Newer drivers often drop testing and support for older games. You can see if the 'Issue: Black Screen on startup' entry in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide helps, or you can use the Window "restore checkpoint" to rollback the graphics driver to your previous version.

You really should not make other changes to your system until you resolve your initial problems. Otherwise you are just compounding the issues with new complications.

I sadly cannot get the backup thing to work, as I have never made a backup.

What I'm going to do is put all the NV files, mods and all in a new folder, then I'm going to do a fresh install, and when that's done I'll put the files back.

Sorry I've made this whole thing a lot more complicated, hopefully this fixes this.

Copy and paste shouldn't have done anything to the originals. You didn't rename the mod or convert it to an esm or anything like that, did you?

If you go into the conversation in the GECK, does the GECK have a Y next to the wav and the lip files? If so, if you click on the wav file, does it play in the GECK?

I was able to look into the GECK, there is no Y in the companion's voice lines, only N's,.

The .wav file also does not play, it plays in the preview but it only plays the last thing I recorded.

The game can't find the files.

They should be in \data\sound\voice\(mod name)\(voice type). In other words, if your mod is named MyMod.esp and the character's voice type is MyMaleVoice, the files should be in \data\sound\voice\MyMod.esp\MyMaleVoice.

The file names should match the name displayed above where the wav is. It will usually be something like zzNPCQuest_zzNPCFollow_0000B4E9_1 and there should be a file with that name with a .wav extension and one with a .lip extension. If you rename the quest, rename the topic ID, change the ID of the voice type, or change the name of the mod, you'll screw up the file names. You can fix it by copying and pasting the correct file name from the GECK onto each file (once you figure out which one is which).

The only other thing I could see causing a problem is if your computer somehow lost track of where the \data\sound folder is located. I have no idea how you would fix that short of uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

Copying the files back from your previous, possibly corrupted folder is not a good idea in the absence of any idea why or how they got "broken" in the first place. You would be better served to simply reinstall them all over again. You can use your old folder for reference.

Your recorded voice files might be usable if you can figure out how to get their paths correct as madmongo has suggested. That is because they would be "unique" and not replacing any vanilla files. If they can't be made to work you can then simply delete them.

I'm trying a fresh install now, sorry I haven't been replying, I've wanted to hold off on asking more questions until I fixed the game, but so far I mucked up two installs, once by putting all the old game files back in, which caused the same glitch to happen, and again by reinstalling only to see it kept all the files.

I'm trying a new install now.

So that's what happened! When I was transfering the mod to my laptop I had to change the .esp's name.

The fresh install didn't exactly work, so I'm going to try that.

The voices files are now working properly Thanks, the both of you, I'll be sure to give you two credit for the help, it would be criminal if I didn't.

It would be a slippery banana if you didn't ... LOL

But seriously ... they aint here for credit ...

Showing others how to use the equipment is not creation of new content. So don't worry when people help point you in the direction.

It is satisfying to see people take and use the information given here. You don't have to start crediting people ... no worries
